Land or boat

My neighbor to my south on my hunting land is selling his tract as he is getting old cant keep up with it anymore.'It would be a great piece to add to my existing land and a great usable investment. However, in order to buy it the laid down the law. Sell the boat to get more land or be content with what I have. I am at my land 4 days a week starting in sept -feb.

Would you sell your boat for more hunting land??

meaux fishing 07-28-2013 09:46 PM

How much land, how much do you own, and how much do you fish? I probably wouldn't do it but I fish a lot

youmyboyblue 07-28-2013 09:51 PM

I own 150 acres right now. The tract I want to buy is an additional 70 acres that butts up to my south and has road and ms river frontage.
I fish a good amount but hunt 10 times more. I would buy another boat to control the itch just not a 50 k boat

Damn thats tough...
If you can still get a boat after the fact that does make a differnece

Land is a good investment and the opportunity to get a section that connects to your existing property isn't going to come up again most likely. I would just think hard about is what you got good enough and how much the extra land would help. How much you like to fish compared to hunting. You could get the land and get a boat that's a little cheaper and use it until your able to get something else.

fishinpox 07-28-2013 10:00 PM

Sell the boat, buy the land then buy another boat in a year :)

saute86 07-28-2013 10:00 PM

They can make more boats you can buy but not land. Land appreciates boats depreciates. Do the math. You can always sell the land later at a profit. Try that with a boat.

youmyboyblue 07-28-2013 10:18 PM

I would for sure buy another older used boat

fishinpox 07-28-2013 10:42 PM

Sell it! I thought of selling mine , I hardly get to use it as much as I want to.

meaux fishing 07-28-2013 10:48 PM

Sell it then

bjhooper82 07-28-2013 10:50 PM

I would with out a doubt sell the boat and buy that land for 2 main reasons. 1, like sauté said, land appreciates, not boats. And more importantly, what if some a-hole ends up buying it and you constantly have trouble with him encroaching one your property. I think it's a no brainier here if you hunt 10x's more than you fish. Good luck with whatever route you take.

bgizzle 07-28-2013 10:59 PM

If my case was urs I'd sell the boat get the land and get a gtr tail 16-18x48boat n be done. Then u have best of both worlds and erry body happy

Good choice!! You and your family and friends will enjoy that land for years and years to come. You can always go order another haynie later.

I make oil 07-29-2013 12:51 AM

Yep. I'd sell the boat and buy the land too in your situation. Good luck.

ski 07-29-2013 09:39 AM

Sell the boat, buy the land. Trade huntin trips for fishin trips. Problem solved & you won't have to worry about boat insurance. Bet ya there are plenty that would take you up on the offer on this board alone.

speck-chaser 07-29-2013 09:42 AM

Yep, good choice. As said earlier, they are not making any more land, but boats are always available.

southern151 07-29-2013 10:01 AM

You need to lay down the "law" real good and, she'll let you keep both! Buy her something real nice too!...It always helps to get your way!

All kidding aside, the land is a no brainer.

Without doubt the land is likely the better long term financial decision.

But it ain't all about the money.

One factor you might consider: You enjoy hunting more, but which do your children enjoy more, hunting on the land or fishing in the boat. Children are in the home and able to be blessed by hunting and fishing with their dad for such a short time.

Selling the boat now and getting another boat in a few years might seem like a short time to YOU, but if one or more of your children really loves fishing now, it might seem like FOREVER before you get the next boat, and he may have lost interest in fishing by then.

You can't get back squandered opportunities during your children's youths, and if your have children, you might consider their preferences as more important than yours. My own children like fishing a lot more than hunting. They like shooting a lot too, but we can usually find a local range to meet this desire.

Owning hunting land is great, but it doesn't just sit there and appreciate with no input. The land I've owned in the past tended to be maintenance and cost intensive, dealing with property taxes, trespassers, tenants, real estate attorneys, fencing, posting, driveways, deer stands, duck blinds, etc.

I know boat can stand for "break out another thousand" but I've found that my boat ends up being suprisingly low maintenance, and the biggest expenses are fuel for the towing vehicle and bait.

My boat essentially gives me access to thousands and thousands of square miles of fishing water, and has enabled my children to have very positive and memorable fishing experiences in Ohio (walleye and muskellunge), North Carolina (trout), New York (bass, chain pickerel, channel catfish), Michigan (walleye, channel catfish, northern pike), Colorado (trout by the hundreds), and Louisiana (redfish, drum, gafftops, shark). We've been eyeing a trip to Florida to add to our species list, which is a big desire of my 12 year old son.

Owning land ties you down to a specific location. Owning a boat gives you 48 states of the best fishing the US has to offer. Public fishing grounds will probably always be more fun and productive than public hunting grounds.

Land, Land, Land!! MathGeek brings up some really good points, but this is an opportunity that you will not likely find again.

youmyboyblue 07-29-2013 12:50 PM

Im trying to wait the ole lady out before selling the boat. I am moving forward with the land though.

Here's what you do. Tell her it's up for sale. Bring it to me and, I'll keep it in good repair for six months or so. At the end of that six months, come pick it up and, tell her that the boat never got any solid leads as far as sale goes. By that time, hopefully, she's moved on to other things to lay down the law on...This how I've acquired a good bit of firearms and, guitars...That and, just plain hiding them!:rotfl:

Ragin_Cajun 07-29-2013 01:23 PM

You can make oil on your land, but you always burn oil in a boat!
