Open water to be announced for Sabine soon.

Several of the larger lakes in the refuge will be designated as open water which will allow boat operation in them. This will open up lots more easily accessible hunting area this year. Also solve the "illegal" running in shallow canals.

Top Dawg 07-11-2013 09:15 AM

Link?

Spunt Drag 07-11-2013 09:18 AM

They're gonna shut down hunting off the burton ditch too. Unit D will be closed to all waterfowl hunting activity.

CajunSteelsetter 07-11-2013 04:25 PM

No link. Came straight from the horses mouth. Talked with refuge managers.

My understanding was they were shutting off access from Burton but they would have a boat lane to area D

WildPig911 07-11-2013 06:23 PM

Burton will not be closed.. I don't know why that rumor is still floating around. It is 100% not true.

WildPig911 07-11-2013 06:37 PM

As soon as I can figure out how to upload the map of the new named lakes that will allow outboard use, I will.

I had the conversation with a Warden last weekend who backed this up. I also asked about the new boat lanes, he himself even said dont hold your breath on that happening, but burton ain't gonna be closed.

Spunt Drag 07-11-2013 07:03 PM

I called HQ, Burton is gonna be open but there's gonna be a 25hp limit and no more mud motors/gatortails allowed.

huntin fool 07-11-2013 07:19 PM

Strictly for burton?

WildPig911 07-12-2013 09:11 AM

Here is the map....

1. You will only be able to run the open water not threw any vegetation.

2. Burton WILL NOT be closed.

3. Surface drive boats WILL BE allowed with NO HP restriction.

4. This is a 2 year probation, so don't mess it up.

5. The new hunt brochures will only be in grayscale so I suggest you print this map and have it with you.

6. This map ONLY indicates the open water that can be run. It DOES NOT show the actual hunt boundaries (which have not changed.)

huntin fool 07-12-2013 09:42 AM

What's the two green squares for? Don't have my actual map pulled up to compare.

wacknstack 07-12-2013 10:30 AM

Well I was gonna get a lease but now I think this will work out well for me...I'll be able to run my prodrive and hunt wherever I want in that mofo and on my way out on the low tide days...charge huntin fool to tow him and his pos boat out.

Spunt Drag 07-12-2013 10:39 AM

I called Obama, all hunting on federal lands will be outlawed.

On your way out? Your lazy self ain't gonna go but 20 yards off the canal and set up camp.. Don't worry though, ill hang around the launch to show you a strap of birds ;)

Tjethro85 07-12-2013 11:52 AM

Y'all can count on hearing/seeing ole DW Bellon out there out there in Slow Devil if this is accurate!!

huntin fool 07-12-2013 12:22 PM

I did notice they placed a trailer at Valstar road, they gonna open a check station of something?

Closed Area indicated in red. (Not 100% accurate but there are signs on the refuge indicating what is open and closed. The hunt brochure will have a better map indicating the closed areas.)

Highlighted open waterways depict the ONLY areas where outboard use will be permitted.

Lol 20 yards....I can remember very distinctly me pulling your midget @$ $ in a boat in lacassine bc you weren't tall enough to wade in

wacknstack 07-12-2013 03:39 PM

And I can be lazy with my prodive drive as far as I want and set up shop

Guys you can trust whatever info WildPig is kind enough to share with us, he is very well connected and close to the information. WildPig thank you for taking time to clear these matters up for everyone.

tucan 07-12-2013 04:12 PM

wildpig

from what i can see you have posted with the maps, it seems to be that you can actually run from trapper lake to burton lake, or is this not the intentions of the management

x2! You are obviously more of an authority on the issue, I just wanted to get the word out to the community on here since I know many are very interested in this sort of info! Thank you for making the maps! Very helpful.

Spunt Drag 07-12-2013 04:47 PM

This oughta be a huge ****** rodeo next year. Everybody was already running in the marsh, so I guess they got tired of fighting it and just said **** it.

WildPig911 07-12-2013 04:47 PM

1. The trailer is there because a construction company is taking out the concrete bridges on central canal.
2. As of right now horsepower is not an issue or on radar. (Don't make it one)
3. You should be able to run from the TS to Burton via however I have not done it yet but will try next week.
4. Please feel free to distribute the map provided. These open waterways are the only places outboards will be aloud to run. If people think they can run anywhere they want then management will without a doubt shut it down again.

homerun 07-12-2013 04:53 PM

Thanks for everything wildpig.

Alright that may be true.. The good ol days, don't ya miss pullin me around? Thank The Lord I could shoot back then to carry the weight for the team.

Montauk17 07-12-2013 05:02 PM

Is the redfishing any good in those marsh lakes?

huntin fool 07-12-2013 05:05 PM

In duck season I can watch reds swim through my spread.. Never fished it.

I heard a story this year about a fella who was shooting so bad he tried to give his gun to the guy he was with in the blind....ring any bells?

huntin fool 07-12-2013 06:02 PM

Noo that's not the story! My guide ran out of shells, and I personally felt guilty being invited on the hunt. So I offered my badazz Benelli for the fella to shoot.
All about making people happy

duck enticer 07-15-2013 02:15 PM

Wild Pig, thanks for sharing the map. I appreciate you giving us the heads up. A buddy called me last night to talk about the changes. I have some recommendations I am going to make via PM.

Pro's:
More room for everyone to navigate. Opens up more area, therefore allowing more hunter's to hunt at a safer distance.

Hopefully the boat/canoe hazard will go away.

If two boats are too close it will be easier for one to get away from the other.

Easier to get to spot with the imposed 4:00 A.M. launch. (I think the launch time should go back to 3; heck even 2).

Cons:

Could potentially open up the marsh more.

More hunters

Lots of hunters where the ducks are if they are in close proximity to one of these running lakes. (The ducks won't be there long)

Surface drive/go devil city. Very loud.

I will say that this needs to be enforced. Will there be signs clearly designating motor/no motor areas? If not, because of the ambiguity of the boundaries of these lakes there will always be individuals who press their luck.

Pretty good. Redfish abused my $1.00 spinnerbaits and my buddy's plastic worms a few years back.

They couldn't police a blanket policy of no running in the marsh, how do they or anybody else expect them to keep up with who's running outside of N 29 51' 51" W 093 33' 55"

Valid point. The inherent problems with regulations is that enforcement is needed.

Do you think that maybe they should've opened all the marsh and it be a "enter at your own risk policy"? Just curious if you think this is a good move.

Top Dawg 07-15-2013 03:22 PM

The ducks should find the impoundment quick this year.

My personal opinion is they should've left it alone and policed the illegal outboard marsh running. The birds were there, but unfortunately so were the people. So groups would pile onto one another to avoid paddling or trollin any deeper in the marsh. So after a couple weekends when that act gets tired and the lack of a game warden presence is noticed, then you see the marsh runners come out. So when you wake up early to make that hour long paddle to get away from the crowds, you've got somebody who slept in and just blows by you and proceeds to where he heard a bunch of shooting last weekend; ie your hole. So do the math on what it's gonna be like this year.

fishhawk 07-15-2013 06:08 PM

thanx for tha info!

fishhawk 07-15-2013 06:14 PM

talked to a guy recently at the refuge and he said don't need no signs cuz everythin is illegal!...lol

Duck Butter 07-16-2013 12:18 PM

Enforcement can NOT be everywhere at once, especially when Sabine, Cameron Prairie, and Lacassine are part of the same refuge complex.

Call them if you see people doing illegal things.

Put this number in your phone and call or send them a text if you see anything happening on private or state lands .

Operation Game Thief (OGT) has been in existence since 1984. OGT is a non-profit corporation, funded and managed by volunteer sportsmen from throughout the state. They meet quarterly to review wildlife violation cases resulting from information provided by program participants and to determine and dispense reward amounts.

The OGT process is fairly simple. If someone witnesses or has information concerning a violation, they should call Operation Game thief's toll-free 24-hour phone line or use the department's tip411 program. The toll free number is 1-800-442-2511.

To use the tip411 program, tipsters can text LADWF and their tip to 847411 or download the "LADWF Tips" iPhone and Android apps from the iTunes or Google Play store free of charge. CitizenObserver, the tip411 provider, uses technology that removes all identifying information before LDWF receives the text so that LDWF cannot identify the sender. Texting or downloading the app enables the public to send anonymous tips to LDWF and lets LDWF respond back, creating a two-way anonymous “chat”. Users of the app or texters can also send in photos to help support their claim and be used as evidence.

The information is received by a Wildlife and Fisheries operator and immediately relayed to a wildlife agent who will investigate. If the information results in an arrest, the caller is eligible for a cash reward.
Since the program began, more than $280,000 in rewards has been paid. Information provided by O.G.T. informants has resulted in the apprehension of more than 700 violators, who were convicted on a multitude of state and federal charges.

For more information, please email questions to Lt. Will Roberts at wroberts@wlf.la.gov.

Every NWR or complex has a phone number for enforcement, they can't be everywhere at once, they need tips:)

This thread made me even more grateful to hunt where I do...sounds like you guys got the Saturday on big lake going on in the refuge during hunting season...smh

WildPig911 07-17-2013 08:41 AM

Refuge law enforcement officers do get the complaints that are called into the state office via the 1800 or text #'s.. Or even if you call the Lake Charles office directly.

FYI... I was able to run a surface drive from Burton to the Trappers Shack through the newly named waterways. I must have hit 250 pieces of debris. The propeller on my surface drive broke off. Once I can narrow down a safe travel path I will post the information on here for all.

Oh you mean to tell me it's unsafe to run in the middle of the day much less the pitch black of early morning? Weird, who woulda thought!
