Big Lake Sunday

1 Attachment(s)
As long as v. bay doesn't miraculously clear up by Sunday, we are going to be heading to the west side to fish the infamous Big Lake. Any one has any pointers on which area to fish for specs. I've been there 3 times and we always fished around west cove and the wash outs and Long Point:confused:. Are these areas still producing fish? I know a lot of you guys know it pretty good, and I'd appreciate any info that ya'll are willing to give. Thanks fellas. See ya'll out there!

I hope to come back like that \/

Me and a buddy fished yesterday evening for about 3 hours. We kept 30 and threw about 25 more keepers back. Fished the birds between Texaco cut and Long Point not too far off that west bank. I don't know how its gonna be this weekend after the front, but there is a lot of shrimp in the lake right now. Weather is supposed to be nice, so I imagine there will be quite a few boats out there. If you go, good luck and hope you catch some!!!

all star rod 10-28-2009 09:14 AM

As it get colder the birds seem to work better towards Turners Bay. On Sunday we caught under birds in the North end of West Cove and in the lake towards the East Bank.....South part of the lake. Good Luck.

jpeff31787 10-30-2009 01:51 PM

SO... does anyone here think we'll have a chance to catch fish on Sunday?? Would it be worth it to go into the gulf if the bay waters are murky??

i hate my luck...

I would stay on the north end of the lake with the north wind blowing....I doubt you will do any good in the gulf. I might be out there this weekend, not sure yet.

o don't worry. I have no shame lol I just want to catch some fish. I dont care if its croakers and sailcats. I don't know where the weirs are though. I just know somewhere on the southeast side of the lake. I hope we catch some birds in the morning and catch then. Hopefully there will only be a few people on the water cuz of the front that just passed through. I'm sure the birds will still work in the morning you know

Montauk17 10-30-2009 02:25 PM

The weirs are very easy to find.....If you launch at heberts just head south and you will see the first weir on your left a few miles down, and there are two more I belive farther south.

cool.. I'll make sure we hit them if nothing else works. We found a cut in north west cove that produces a lot of redfish and to me it should hold some flounder but haven't pulled any out yet. I just want to be able to go out and not fight the winds man. I've been off the water for 3 WEEKS!! I'm going crazy lol

Ray 10-30-2009 02:29 PM

There are 4 total sets of weirs on that side of the lake.
There is also one right before you get to the Old River, where it hits Big Lake.
There is a big 2 story camp on pilings right next to it, just South of the Old Jetties.

Ray 10-30-2009 02:33 PM

About 3 weeks ago, me and some friends got on the Flounder in the Old River, just North of Cameron.
One day they were in shallow water, to the West of the shrimp barges where the river hits the lake.
Next day, they were in deeper water close to Speckdaddy's Marker 56 and heading East towards the curve where it turns North.
The old yellow and white double Speck Rigs is what were were catching them on. It was right after a cold snap and the winds were 15 mph. We caught them on an incoming tide both days.

With the forecast calling for rain & wind I would say the weirs are going to be the best bet this weekend. Live bait is always a plus. I would suggest live shrimp carolina rigged on bottom. Dead shrimp would be the next best thing. Depending on the tide & water conditions you may also want to try live finger mullet or live shad. Good luck. Be sure to post & let us know what you catch.

What's the forecast - worried about all the fresh water coming down the ship channel from the drain off. Thoughts?

you seriously think its going to be that bad W? If its going to be muddy like that, i don't think we are going to go. Do you ever fish by the LNG plant by the Turning Basin? I know I've asked you before, but we used to always see people fishing there. Wonder if you've been or heard anything about the area lately

I dont know how much rain they got?? Its a hard call to make....

Ray 10-31-2009 12:25 AM

We got a buttload of rain today.
Yesterday, north and central La. got a lot of rain.
I called Jordan north of Deridder, my niece south of Deridder, my Dr. in Houston and my friends in Beaumont to see when the rain would hit us yesterday. I was cooking a hog and 50 lbs. of chickens, outside, for a Halloween Party, on the water by 210 bridge.
Houston was getting pounded, Jordan was getting a little rain here and there, Beaumont and South Deridder no rain, Lake Charles no rain. Friends in Monroe got water up to the eve's of their house. It was bad on the Quichata(spelling?) River up there.
There is flooding all around South Lake Charles.
I just got back from a Halloween Party in the North Lake Charles area. Lots of standing water all over the place. Lots of water still running pretty fast in the ditches, going somewhere and will end up in the river.
One more Halloween Party tomorrow night. But I ain't gotta cook, just drank.

all star rod 10-31-2009 08:01 AM

I think the West side of the state got a lot more rain then the East side. However, I find that Big Lake clears-up quick once the winds lay down!

Ray 10-31-2009 11:16 AM

There is hardly any winds right now.
But there is a lot of fresh water coming down the river.

what you say ray? Hit it or no. OR where would we most likely find clear water. I was thinking that by the LNG plant like by DII (the big turning basin) it would be clear there. I used to work for a contract crew at DII and it seemed like that place stayed looking pretty clear.

wind has been calm today... Hit it.....I would fish south..;)

Ray 10-31-2009 05:00 PM

I fished the Old River a lil while ago. Muddy, but very calm winds.
5 boats caught around 100 small Flounder.
They would not hit artificial, so we chunked a cast net and fished with live bait, about 2 ft. under a perch jerkin cork. They are not on the bottom today. They are all over the river, but high up.

Ray 10-31-2009 05:06 PM

Small Flounder

1 Attachment(s)
They are all small, not like 3 weeks ago when the last big front came thru.
We didn't leave them on ice long enough before cleaning. They were super
slimey and hard to scale.
My boat caught 30 in less than an hour. On live shrimp and what ever fish we could catch in the cast net.
We had to come back to Lake Charles pretty quick. My cousins husband had something to do with getting some horses brought down here from Bossier City due to a levee that might bust at any time by La. Downs Racetrack.
It sounds like North La. is catching heck from all the rain in the past 3 days.

all star rod 10-31-2009 05:08 PM

Good catch! That was probably fun. You can launch in Big Lake and still get there? Did you happen to look at the water in the lake. Thank you ray

Ray 10-31-2009 05:14 PM

The winds are almost flat. The water pretty stained and moving out fast. Water isn't as high as yesterday, but still a little high.
We launched by the old govment docks in Cameron. That launch is really bad. But it is right close to where we fished. I won't launch there again after a lot of rain. Got stucked pretty bad.
We caught some West of the shrimp barges close to the lake, some just South of the old Russian ships they are tearing down and some also by the old McDaniel docks.
We caught our bait by T-boys weirs.

They didn't fight too hard.

Most of the guys were almost finished before we got there. There was 4 boats still fishing when we got there and a commercial crabbing boat came out to fish some too.
