K2 Cooler Question

Ok so I got a K2 for Christmas... Havent used it yet til this weekend. Should I have gone through 4 bags of ice in 2 days???? :shaking: The only things kept in the cooler were water and cokes...For the money I thought it would've "held ice longer". Its a Cryo 60.

The chest was hardly opened, kept in shade, sealed correctly. Kinda aggravates me. Any opinions on the cooler and whether or not i should return it?? Should I contact the website?? Bought it from the store on hwy 90 in sulphur.

FF_T_Warren 05-20-2013 08:09 AM

Did u chill it down first? They recommend to chill it with a bag or two the night before

meaux fishing 05-20-2013 08:10 AM

I would return it and spend the extra $100 on a yeti... You wouldnt have even been able to fit 4 bags of ice in 2 days in a yeti 65 filled with drinks.

meaux fishing 05-20-2013 08:11 AM

did you keep it in your house or a non temp controlled place like a storage building before putting ice in it?

FF_T_Warren 05-20-2013 08:11 AM

And once again, my take on expensive coolers is that you don't save money on ice, you save money by rarely replacing the cooler due to broken parts and stuff

was kept in the garage.

ckinchen 05-20-2013 08:17 AM

I used one of my k2's this weekend. I had stored it in the garage so it was very hot. The first bag of ice melted really quickly. Once the Cooler cooled down I put another bag in. I used the cooler for a party for my baseball team on Friday. Sunday morning I was playing ball with the kids and went and picked up a water out of the cooler, it was still ice cold.

I would expect the first two bags to go quickly on day one...day 2 I replaced those 2 bags with 2 more that morning.... but later when i was replacing 2 more bags for drinks that were more than chilled then you have to begin to wonder whats up.

I just dont see any factors that couldve played a roll in it.

BassAssasin 05-20-2013 08:18 AM

hot drinks and a hot cooler will dang near eat a bag maybe 2 right off the bat

If it gets really hot in there any of the high dollar coolers will retain that heat for a long time. When I had a yeti I would bring it in the house the night before fishing and open the lid to let it cool down a little. It is probably the same with the k2

I get that... but once the cooler has been cooled down for a day you would expect a little duration in the ice right??

SaltERedneck 05-20-2013 08:23 AM

I appreciate the info fellas.. will cool it down the night before next time and see how it works.... guess I was buying too much into the "keeps ice longer" pitch... forgot to read the fine print: ONLY IF YOU COOL IT DOWN FIRST AND MAKE THE PROPER PREPERATIONS :help::rotfl:

BIG RED 1983 05-20-2013 08:23 AM

k2 is sub par to a yeti if you are basing on experience you have had in the past with a yeti you will not get the same results k2s are cheaper so you can expect less out of them i have a yeti and a k2 i would not buy another k2

Hitinitdaily 05-20-2013 08:36 AM

Have you seen the New K2 Summits Series? I own Yeti and K2 and I am now selling all my Yetis. Yeti weighs too much and the New K2 holds ice just as Long! A 120qt K2 weighs less than my 75qt yeti.

Save yourself $70 bucks a chest and get a new Summit K2.

Andy C 05-20-2013 08:42 AM

both k2 and yeti are good coolers, the ice you got my have been the problem. I have a yeti 65 in the back of my truck (for 5 years) beer cooler and it is used ALOT lol , keep ice in it all the time. with that said if i get ice stright out of the ice maker it only last a day maby a day and a half, if i bag ice from the maker and freeze it it will last 3 to 4 days. (a bucket and a bag hold the same amount) with that alot of stores have there ice frezzers turned way up warm, so by the time it hit the cooler it was already about gone even tho the bag was still full.

Just my exp.

mikedatiger 05-20-2013 08:46 AM

A little off subject, but I am going to spend the money on a few of these ice packs to see how they perform.

Wow, I packed some drinks in a 60 quart Coleman Extreme Friday night. Played in a baseball tournament all weekend for my kid and left it in the back of my truck. Yesterday when I took the drinks out the cooler to put back in the ice box they still had ice in it. Guess I made a good purchase.

Notes:
I bought drinks during the week and put them in the ice box so they were cold for a day
I bought a bag of Slo-Melt Ice
My drinks were still cold on Sunday

Yeh that sounds pretty stupid. I have 2 Yeti's and have never had an issue with ice not holding. And I surely never "cool down" my "ice" chest!! Go out to my deer lease in Laredo with no running water or electricity. Fill those yetis up on Thursday on way there. Fill with quartered deer and on Sunday they are still holding ice in sometimes 80-90 degree temps. Just have to add a little on way back for the 10 hour ride home.

SULPHITE 05-20-2013 09:39 AM

where'd you guys buy your forklifts?? Its what you need to lift these over insulated ice chests full of cool pops...

T-TOP 05-20-2013 09:57 AM

It does help to cool a yeti and the drinks before using if it's coming out of a hot storage shed or something... I don't cool mine. Couple case of pops and a 20lb bag of ice, will last several days.
Bought a 100qt Coleman extreme,$80-$100 can't remember. Used it once for a golf tourn, and once to haul some shrimp once. Stored in garage for 7months, took out last week, lid and upper wall is warped will not close completely... 65qt yeti going on 6yrs no problems

speck cc 05-20-2013 10:15 AM

i have a yeti, 3 k2's and 2 coleman extremes... i will use the colemans 99% of the time. the yeti/k2 are just too bulky and heavy! one of my colemans is 150qt and 7 years old... still works like new and was bought for $50 from walmart. in my opinion the extra cost for a yeti/k2 is not justified. all first hand experience

longsidelandry 05-20-2013 10:15 AM

I keep a couple of 2 liter coke bottles in the freezer and thrown them in my Yeti the night before when I know I'll be using it during the summer time just to get rid of the oven temperature heat on the inside. Then I load it up with cold drinks and a couple bags of ice and it's good for a few days. But during the winter time (hunting season) I use it the first weekend of the season and usually add 1 bag of ice and my silver cans to it for each weekend. I have a 50 qt Sherpa and a 75 qt Tundra and want to get a 125 Tundra.

My extreme works very well, new it would hold for 5-6 days in my truck under the tonneau and in my garage, the problem is the crap hinges and as it ages it doesn't seal as well - this is where the others shine. I can still get 4 days if ice and another 1 or 2 of keeping cold in the water.

I like the fact that K2 is local...

jrdntboy09 05-20-2013 11:00 AM

My k2 holds ice just as long or maybe even longer than my yeti, and dang near half the weight and price of yeti

3FLa 05-20-2013 11:01 AM

It does not matter

It does not matter if you have a $30.00 cooler or a $300.00 cooler. If you put drinks/beer etc. that are room temp. you will eat through ice.

I keep a frozen 2 liter bottle of water. When I am going to use my cooler, I put the frozen bottle in cooler the night before. I also put the drinks in my frig the night before (if I have space) or in cooler with frozen water bottle.

In morning, take water bottle out of cooler and put back in freezer for next time. Now, you cooler is less than room temp and so are your drinks.

Again, this will same on ice regardless of type of cooler you own.

BassYakR 05-20-2013 11:14 AM

I have the small drink cooler k2.... And i can fill it with ice and drink... Have it on the boat all day... Holds ice for full trip and even next day its got ice n water in it.

Fill the yeti with drinks and ice to the top morning of fishing on a sunday leave left over drinks and water and ice in it, tues and wed still some ice in it....come sat morning no ice but water is still cool, drain water and fill her back up, mine gets usedtoo much to warm up never a prob!!

Duck Butter 05-20-2013 11:36 AM

so lets get this straight:

1. cool the Yeti/K2 before you use it (use ice to do this, either a bag of ice or a 2 liter bottle frozen)

2. cool the drinks before you put them in Yeti/K2

3. the ice you buy/use can make a difference (there are different types of ice:confused::grinpimp:)

4. do not open the Yeti/K2 very much or the heat will enter

Any other instructions for a $300+ container that just holds a couple dollars of ice and some fish/drinks?:*****::help:

EXACTLY why i posted this thread. If I wouldve bought the cooler i wouldve been upset. For 200-300$ this darn cooler should make ice for me!!!! I think a styrofoam container would do the purpose I need. LOL.

Salt Life stickers probably stick better on that slick surface Yeti though:smokin:

for the OP, I have a couple of Coleman Extremes and the hinges may break but I can live with that and buy 7 brand new icechests for the price of a Yeti/K2. I have a friend that brought his purple and gold LSU Yeti for the drinks once (he got ragged hard for the LSU Yeti, but anyway:grinpimp:). That thing being dark in color is going to attract heat and it didn't even hold ice the whole day because it was hot to begin with. Buy a white topped icechest whatever you do. If you need it to be green for hunting or whatever just throw something green on top of it.

Matt G 05-20-2013 12:15 PM

My small K2 will hold ice for days...... If I don't open it. Once I start drinking and open it every 20 minutes or so, the ice will melt just like any other ice chest. It is a very well built ice chest, which is why I bought it, but I'm still scratching my head at that investment.

I'm so salt life my K2 has Deuce Rod stickers, it's own pair of Costas, and only wears Sperrys!

papap 05-20-2013 01:31 PM

I have a K2 and hardly ever use it. Always worried about it being stolen.

I could not find any good details or photos of the new K@ Summit series coolers or what makes them different than the standard models. They don't have them on their website.

Lol... Had it full of beer at the golf tourn., and a 100lbs of iced down shrimp the second time it was used.. Never have gotten more than about a year out of regular coolers...walls seperate, warp, hinges break, inside cracks, etc...

Now I have sealed up some boiled crawfish in some yetis before... Didn't phase them...

Seems they are redoing their website but if you google K2 cooler summit, you will come up with some local dealers and can see pics, specs, etc. Here is the 1st one that came up.

I use a 55qt igloo marine (white), Boat sits in the sun most of the time.
On afternoon trips I'll throw in a bag and a half of ice in it for the fish I may keep. Usually by the next day there is still ice and water in it after sitting all day in the sun. Sometimes I throw an extra bag in otw home to keep the fish extra cool. Lightweight is great for me also. The latches etc are crap but you can upgrade them and still come out for 1/3 of the price of a yeti. I've been abusing the cooler for a year and its held up..

Montauk17 05-20-2013 05:04 PM

I always bought igloo but they never lasted....started using the coleman extreme and they are much better. Hold ice all day on a hot summer day in the boat. I got a 30qt k2 and it is nice but I just can't see spending 3-500 bucks for a bigger one.
