Cotton???

CajunSaint 04-09-2013 08:32 PM

Did it smell??

Clafleur 04-09-2013 08:33 PM

That's what I'm thinking. It was about 5 ft long b4 I hit it w/my shotty. Only cut it in half and had to fish it out from under the house and finished it off with a shovel

Clafleur 04-09-2013 08:34 PM

All I could smell was Sh!+, but it was running down both my legs

Does it have round eyes? Looks like a rat snake maybe.

Clafleur 04-09-2013 08:40 PM

The eyes looked round and the inside of the mouth was white

inchspinner 04-09-2013 08:43 PM

Country Boy 04-09-2013 08:44 PM

Lol yeh I was having a tough time IDing him with the damage. Head looks pointed.

Clafleur 04-09-2013 08:54 PM

What can I say, it was like the country song, I got carried away by the look in its eyes

wtretrievers 04-09-2013 08:58 PM

That's funny! If you are willing to get close enough the round pupils are non poisonous & diamond shape (cat eye) pupils are poisonous!

To tell the whole story, I was about to feed my son dinner and my mom came running in my house. She tripped, stubbed her toe, and was yelling get your shovel! So I got my shovel and saw the snake head sticking out about 3 inches from under my house. So I went and got my Winchester defender 12g and put a #8 in it. The neighborhood crackheads were walking down the street looking at my crazy *** standing on the porch with a shovel and shot gun. I nudged its tail and it tried to turn back under the house so I shot it in its mid section trying not to shoot my house. It cut it in half and the head kept on a trucking under my house. I couldn't shoot it again under the house. That little bastard bunkered in under the middle of my house. S then I tried to pepper spray it to make it come out but my spray was empty. I finally managed to get it out after soaking it with the water hose then I went babe Ruth on it with the shovel!
The end

Rat snake - should not be killed

He's one of the good guys. I don't understand why some peopple feel a need to kill every snake.

swt70611 04-10-2013 06:15 AM

Rat snake would have had a rat in his mouth. No rat = rattle snake in my mind.

To me there are only 2 kinds of snakes, good and bad. See snake, kill snake, identify snake.
Look at belly once dead to identify.
Dual row of scales after the anal plate means they're harmless.
Single row of scales after anal plate means they're venomous.
Very easy to see. It's single all the way to anal plate then either stays the same or changes to two scales going across instead of one all the way across.

Lil Silver 04-10-2013 06:47 AM

Chopped up chicken snake, same as rat snake. Caught some big one's before....they can really squeeze when they get wrapped up around your arm! Seen some up to 6 feet long. I don't mess with the poisonous kind. They always end up dead quick.

kenmore_mo1 04-10-2013 07:42 AM

diamondback water snake

kenmore_mo1 04-10-2013 07:45 AM

diamondback water snake, I get them in my wood duck boxes eating my eggs, of course it's their last meal if caught

BigChaf 04-10-2013 08:22 AM

You can tell by the head , it is a cotton mouth, check out the previous rat snake pic, the head is not the same. Just goes to show you why you kill it first then identify, would not want a poisonous snake going free around my house because I thought it was a rat snake.

specktator 04-10-2013 08:31 AM

Definitely not a cottonmouth. His head looks that way because he took a severe beating/shooting/shoveling.

bjhooper82 04-10-2013 08:35 AM

It's not a cottonmouth.

elebouef 04-10-2013 08:38 AM

When you see 1 rat snake there is usually another one somewhere not to far.

YellowMouth7 04-10-2013 09:50 AM

or chicken snake

Goggleeye11 04-10-2013 01:57 PM

Diamond back water snake. I'd post a picture but don't know how. Killed one on my back porch last year.

DVM 04-10-2013 02:00 PM

Texas rat snake.

rustyb 04-10-2013 02:13 PM

That snake just gave birth to a bunch of babies! they usually have about 50.

:rotfl: I am crying at this story:rotfl:

Its a 100% ratsnake aka chicken snake though

that guy 04-17-2013 01:31 AM

Had one just like that in my yard last year, just about stepped on it the 2nd time I walked by it. Scared the **** outta me! Ended up at my parents 2 days later on their porch, dad got a hold to it with the shovel, made big snake into little snake. Ended up being a rat snake.

The only good snake is a snake on tv! but then u start to notice every little thing that rubs ur leg or at least I do!

saltysully 04-17-2013 07:10 AM

It's a copperhead. we have tons of em . poisonous too, obviously.

saltysully 04-17-2013 07:16 AM

It's a copperhead. if you want to be sure, take a scredriver and 'raise' it's fangs by sliding a screwdriver sideways in it's mouth, then slide the screwdriver forward. you'll see 2 fangs. If you only see teeth, it's probably just a rat snake, but I'm pretty sure it's a copperhead. we have ton's of em here.

Here is a Copperhead picture I took a few years back.

.

southern151 04-17-2013 02:57 PM

^^^That's a real copperhead!^^^

We had them suckers everywhere in Oklahoma! I don't miss the volume of those snakes at all!

1fastmerc 04-17-2013 03:36 PM

My wife was bit by a copper head. I personally saw the damage they can cause.

After doing a little more research, I see by the look of the banding it is NOT a copperhead. hard to tell from the pics. copperheads have hourglass looking bands across their back, where the wide part of the hour glass is oriented to the side of the snake. this one does not have that type banding.
