ATV problem

I have a honda rancher that is giving me trouble. It will start fine but then die at idle. After it dies it will not start again until you let it sit for a day or two and then the same routine. Any suggestions?

Might have a carb build-up... might need to take it (carb) apart and run some clean (new) gas through it. If it starts, all electrical and spark is normaly out of the problem. So now, you gotta look at fuel. I've had to tear a few of my bikes down over the past few years... from sinking them in ponds to whatever... i know my way around a rancher and a foreman... got any more questions PM me.

I agree.
When was the last time it ran, and did it run good back then?
If shouldn't be an electrical problem, if it was, it would cool off quicker than a few days.

Jordan started it

Sounds like the low speed jet is plugged. That's an easy fix. My 300 was doing that this summer and I fixed it with no problem.

It ran fine last time I used it which was about two months ago. Its an 05 but has not been used much. The way its acting is like its flooding but it should't be. It has fire, I cheched that. So I,m thinking fuel problems of some kind.

CatDaddy 10-21-2009 05:13 PM

did you try draining the old fuel, and cleaning the tank? Do you use Stabil?

Ducktrickster 10-21-2009 05:13 PM

Also....QUIT JACKING MY THREAD!!!!!!!

yellalilyslicker 10-21-2009 05:16 PM

If its a 420 rancher I had trouble with the automatic choke hanging up but it would only take a couple hours and it would start again, also check fire at plug after it dies could possibly be a coil problem.

huntin fool 10-21-2009 05:18 PM

Old gas, carb build up. Had the problem this year with my honda fourtrax, drained some gas, added new gas, runs like a champ once warmed up. before it actually ran perfect we ran 2 tanks thru it and now she works just fine

Ray 10-21-2009 07:09 PM

When it starts to die, throttle the choke a little to see if you can keep her running.
If it does keep running, then it is the low speed jet.

scatv 10-22-2009 02:48 PM

I was thinking low speed jet also but usually they will keep firing up and then die not just not start for a day or two. But I have seen carbs. give some strange problems.

Ducktrickster 10-22-2009 03:43 PM

Haven't had a chance to work on it yet but for kicks I tried to start it yesterday and it would not start at all. Guess i'll have to check it out this weekend.

pull the line off, drain the gas, put some more in it,try it. Worked for us

Ducktrickster 11-03-2009 09:30 PM

Well, I finally got a little time to check the bike out. I broke the carb down and it could have be clogged jets...I really couldn't tell. I think the real problem was the float valve. It was stuck and took a little work to loosen but I got it out. Cleaned it all up real good and put it back on. Fired right up and is running great. Thanks for the help!

SULPHITE 11-03-2009 09:33 PM

Thats a good feeling when you get it right!! :)
