Preferred Polarized sunglasses

I usually don't wear sunglasses, but getting into bay fishing, figure I better get a good pair of polarized glasses. I would hate to lose them and be out of 180.00. (I know they make those trap things)

What is you're favorite glasses,(make and model) and do you know of any good cheap pairs that you wouldn't mind losing, but have good quality.

goldenrod 02-12-2013 11:29 AM

Any Costa

jchief 02-12-2013 11:29 AM

Pretty much Costas is all I wear anymore. I have several different kinds. I used to buy the cheaper ones and loose or break a pair or 2 a year. When I went to the more expensive ones, I tend to take better care of them and they have a lifetime warranty.

weedeater 02-12-2013 11:30 AM

Calcutta(sp?) $15 for cheap and for good ones I have two pair Costa 580g lens that were regular $250 but I only paid $75 for one pair on eBay and others on steep and cheap.

Spunt Drag 02-12-2013 11:31 AM

Best lens, UV protection, clarity and relief from squinting are Costas in my opinion. But their frames are lacking.

BassYakR 02-12-2013 11:42 AM

Ive been using costas, on my 3rd pair. Love the way they look and great lenses. I would agree the frames could use some work. Last two pairs the frames straightened on me.

Been using costa for years but recently bought some wiley x with the foam around the inside of the frame. Very nice glasses and not as expensive as the costas.

Kaenon's

Maui Jim's are good too. I used to buy cheap ones but quality made me switch to the more expensive ones. I also own two pairs of costas

SaltyShaw 02-12-2013 01:11 PM

Ive been thinking about trying a pair of those. Does the foam insert really help? I like to sight fish for reds and bedding bass.

The foam is for keeping dust and wind out of your eyes, sight fishing your better off with a wider framed costa that blocks the sunlight from sides and tops

We have the Wiley Xs at work, I'm not impressed

BassYakR 02-12-2013 01:26 PM

Hmm... on the wiley x website and on their commercial they say the foam is to block the sun Around the outside of the frame. So u can pennetrate the surface of the water better. Idk

Go try Costa Blackfins, they will block way more light out and have bigger lens for better visibility than Harpoons

msuchill4 02-12-2013 01:36 PM

check out wiley x.. great pair of glasses

SGib 02-12-2013 01:42 PM

Oakley polarized scratch really easy. Have had good luck with the costas.

I have a pair of the blackfins I prefer the wiley x now. The blackfins are nice but the weight of them gets uncomfortable fishing all day. This is the model I bought....http://www.wileyx.com/EcommSuite/Pro...emCode=CCJAK06

Leaving them in a vehicle on a hot summer day will do this for sure!

This happened to me. Also bent some when they were in my pocket, also broke a hinge on the arms.

Capt. Kade Shaw

Yep, good glasses and a good hat with a wide brim is best for sight fishing.

jchief 02-12-2013 03:05 PM

One thing I know for sure, Costas warranty and turn around is good. Search the boards for a couple of threads about it.

Bingo!! I bought a pair of yellow lensed Kaenon's last year and love em'. For early morning to mid-day they can't be beat. I do switch to Costa's once the sun is in full gear only because I don't have darker shaded Kaenon's...

Great sunglasses, Ive had mine for about 3 years now and they are honestly some of the toughest frames Ive ever had

LPfishnTIM 02-12-2013 03:27 PM

I have a pair of oakley pitbull with orange tint lense, I only wear them when I'm fishing. someone gave me a pair of cocoons, they're not bad, just ugly! they cost $50

Wiley Xs at work?

seatrout 02-12-2013 04:28 PM

Have had same pr. of costa's for more than 10 years and still love them! Costa (Wave killer) made for larger faces. strongly suggest glass lenses if you can handle the weight of glasses lens. You can clean them with end of shirt and never get scratched. My frame did break once but very inexpensive to send off for repair.(like $30 I think) but it was my fault they broke and they fixed them up no questions asked. Pick up a Costa brochure and pick a frame size sm, med, or large to fit your size face. You will not be sorry you spent the extra $ in the long run if you take care of them.

Yeh they gave us a pair of polarized and transitional lenses for work when I was offshore.
I like the transitional ones for work but the polarized green mirror ones we got weren't to impressive and the foam peice is just there to be a nasty uncomfortable and un natural sweat absorber.......

Maui Jim all the way I prefer them over costas can wear them for outdoor activities and for casual dress

Ah, thought you were talking about where we work.

Bucoo 02-12-2013 06:44 PM

Been wearing costas for a several years. Ain't gonna get nothing else.

ski 02-12-2013 07:13 PM

Got the Wiley x and with the foam insert in place I can run the boat without my eyes watering. Would prolly help riding motorcycles too.

BROWN FIN 02-12-2013 07:41 PM

Anyone ever use these?
I've used costas for years but always looking at new options.

laugh all you want, but Berkleys at WalMart for five bucks are very good. Almost disposable, got a few pair for guests on the boat who show up with non-polarized. No worry whatsoever about loss, scratching, warranty hassle and/or time to turn them around.

I know yall love your Costas, but the Berkleys are an outstanding back-up or replacement.

bgizzle 02-12-2013 10:30 PM

X2 on berkleys but lenses pop out. Oh we'll buy another pair hard to that with costas. I'm gonna give y'all insight on warranty for costas. Lifetime warranty on "manufacturer defect" I've sent 5 pairs in and only once did they warranty them all other times its the cost of lenses...mirror 580=$99 copper 580=89$.... This is last time I pay for em next time ill sell them for 75%off and let the buyer ship em. 10$ ship, 89$fee, 10$ ship back. They new lenses now not new frames. I'm hard on glasses but at that price they should be nearly indestructible.

OhSoEasy 02-12-2013 10:37 PM

Walmart also sells some glasses made by Wiley x but cheaper. They have a similar name. My brother in law has them and loves them. I think they run in the 50-70 market.

He where's Kenny powers glasses. Stevie designed!

flounder_smacker 02-13-2013 12:15 AM

Yeah I quit sending in my costas. For 30 bucks more what they want for repair and shipping you can get a new pair on eBay for. They need to step up on the frames. I break more frames than lenses and the paint usually wears off before anything. A good pair with titanium frames would be the shizz.

SaltyShaw 02-13-2013 07:11 AM

I don't know *** y'all are doin to these frames, I've never had any come close to breaking. Y'all hell on wheels

Capt. Kade Shaw

BassYakR 02-13-2013 08:41 AM

My frames dont break they just straighten out... Its all the frames simular to the brines. They know its a problem and told me they dont plan on changing anything with them.

I have heard about the warranty issue and for 190 bucks seems like you would just ship it and get them fixed and return no charge. Abuse would be another thing.
That is the only problem I am having with buying a pair.

speck cc 02-13-2013 10:57 AM

maui jim's! been wearing them for years... never a reason to switch. the maui jim bronze lenses are the best lenses out there
