You did well on the boat, congratulations

GPS for boat or a handheld? Any handheld will do just fine for what 95% of people use. Even the $100 ones will do way more than most people ever use. The brands are kinda like a Ford vs Chevy/Canon vs Nikon debate, I have always had a Garmin and are partial to those because I am used to them. A Garmin eTrex is about as simple as they come and will probably do more than you will ever need and are cheap. The software that comes with them allows you to use Google Earth for your aerial images as well as topo maps.

budndawn 10-08-2012 06:13 PM

X2 on the Garmin eTrex

hardball 10-08-2012 08:25 PM

Good for you, man. Enjoy every second of it. Very clean looking rig.

SeaHunt19 10-08-2012 08:36 PM

Nice Cape! Congrats! On the GPS, I like the Lowrance HDS5. I'm very happy with it so far. Good luck on Wed.

haoward 10-08-2012 08:45 PM

which Garmin eTrex do yall recommend? And do you think CP would be a good place to launch for a beginner?

budndawn 10-08-2012 09:08 PM

I have the summit HC but it is an older one... I'm sure there are newer ones

budndawn 10-08-2012 09:09 PM

CP is a good launch for beginners

budndawn 10-08-2012 09:11 PM

Get you a VB map and look it over...not a hard place to figure out

Duck Butter 10-09-2012 06:46 AM

Have an eTrex legend and a summit both are easy to run

drunken clam 10-09-2012 11:53 AM

luv dose lil cape horneys

good hull

good luck

heres my cp honey hole for ya/./...what we called the north shore..outtta quintanna..take a right..head towards shark bayou..fish that north bank all the way to blue point...we always do well ther when tides and wind s are right..some times they are close in..sometinmes they are quite a ways off the bank..there is a shell oyster reef near the bank..about 1/3 of the way towards blue pt..right after a small inlet in the bank..always caught there..a 7.2 lb trout was caught there which won the star 2 yrs ago..we used to troll up and down and do pretty well

Put some Gulf Wax on the carpet after you change it out, it will slicken them up real good.

haoward 10-10-2012 07:19 PM

Just got back from CP fished right outside the launch by the rocks only one spec, and alot of BIG crockers, also a lot of undersized drum and reds..I really need to get a GPS

haoward 10-10-2012 08:01 PM

So I had the boat in the water today and notice the boat outboard was smoking pretty bad all day, Can my automatic oil mixer be bad?

1fastmerc 10-10-2012 08:13 PM

Nice boat buddy.

it cud be or ur spark plugs may need to be replaced. or check ur carb.

haoward 10-11-2012 01:30 PM

Does anyone know what type of oil does the lower unit use? I was told 1qt but i need to know what kind thanks

fishingonewild 10-11-2012 01:33 PM

moibil it has the one with squeexe bottle u gotta buy the tube with hose which does not sell together....

fishingonewild 10-11-2012 01:35 PM

i changed my bottom unit oil and check to see if there no white type of oil which can tell u that u got a leak and its not seal up good tha water does get in it somehow but if u dont see any white type of color then ur aiigh. i used the bottle that u can put on a tube and plug it in the hole and squeexe the bottle to fill it back up.

haoward 10-11-2012 01:38 PM

what weight oil do I buy?

jchief 10-11-2012 01:42 PM

Go to a boat dealer or Academy or Wal Mart and get some lower unit oil. I believe it is 90 weight

haoward 10-11-2012 01:45 PM

Thanks

meaux fishing 10-11-2012 03:48 PM

If I were you I would look up how to disconnect the oil pump and mix your gas and oil in the tank. People always told me I should do that and I planned to, then I burned up my motor when it went out one night on my way back to the prien launch...Not a good feeling

haoward 10-11-2012 04:08 PM

Is they any way I can check the oil pump too see if it's mixing right?

haoward 10-11-2012 04:29 PM

just pulled the plug and the spark plug was wet with oil...any clue?

haoward 10-11-2012 04:30 PM

spark plug threads are wet with oil, the spark plugs where not on all that tight can that be the cause of the oil?

DA COVE 10-11-2012 04:40 PM

Not sure how much smoke your talking about or how familiar you are with the older 2 strokes, but they will smoke quite abit compared to the newer DFI 2 strokes and 4 strokes.. Better to smoke to much than none at all. Smoke means it's getting lubed. Check your plugs, if its running ok and not fouling plugs there shouldn't be a problem. Also, if you not bringing you RPMs up to or near WOT it may be loading up.. which means there's excess fuel in the cylinders. Good luck and enjoy!!

Yes that would be normal, especially if they were not torqued properly.

fishingonewild 10-11-2012 04:50 PM

haoward if i was u i wud buy new plugs and know tha u put it on urself and its not loose then u wud know that u got new spark plugs and not have to worry abt it later on down the road. as for the oil mix pump just check and see if its not leaking thru any hose or pump itself not going out....

haoward 10-11-2012 04:57 PM

thats a bunch guys this is my 1st outboard so I am pretty new at all this, but I will change the spark plugs out, just got done changing the lower unit oil out checked out good.

jchief 10-11-2012 05:04 PM

Looks like normal 2 stroke plugs. Don't see anything that jumps out as abnormal

fishingonewild 10-11-2012 05:05 PM

good good once u get it all fixed up and check out everything on ur motor to be checked out even grease up ur steering rod and the mount where ur motor raise up and down then check ur oil pump to see wha it cud be. hope ur next fishing trip comes out better. and a little advice to ya if u feel comfortable tha ur motor can handle a good ride around the bay chase the birds and u will get on some white trout and specks. good luck and hope u do well... let us know how u do out there if u get to go back to v.bay

Don't forget to check the spark plug "gap" on the new plugs. New plugs may not be set correctly for you engine.
