Salty when painting, would spray paint work just as fine???

Anyone (other than salty) paint or make their own baits?

eman 10-04-2009 11:38 AM

painting

HF ,
Spray paint is very hard to controll when painting a small surface like a fishing lure. Air brush works alot better as you can fade colors w/ airbrush or use a small artist brush.
Use toothpicks to do small details like eyes ,gills, dots, etc.

Ok, thanks.

Yeah, i mainly use spray paint for like the body, and a piece of mesh/netting for scales

huntin fool 10-04-2009 01:20 PM

Just sprayed the last coat of "bone"

So tooth picks work fine for like detailing (eyes, gills, etc.)

Yes they do....Just remember to practice on something else before you start with the lure...also you may want to take a pencil and draw what you want on the lure then paint it on...

Jordan 10-04-2009 01:27 PM

Good tips bluechip

I use to carve my own baits, and paint them with paint brush. Here is a popper below that i carved/painted, just never took the dremel and made the popper part.

Never thought of using a tooth pic though. Thanks Bluechip.

What yall think of a bone color she dawg with red gills, and red belly, kinda like this spook

Jordan 10-04-2009 01:32 PM

Lol. Sorry.

Jordan 10-04-2009 01:33 PM

Cool. Nice job B

Bluechip 10-04-2009 01:35 PM

Looks like a good start Fool....a little color and your ready to smack the bass...

huntin fool 10-04-2009 01:57 PM

Just tried the tooth pic on another bait, worked great for the gills!

One question before i do it on the she dog...

If its a bone color, red gills, red belly, what color eyes?

Bluechip 10-04-2009 02:07 PM

Just be creative and pick a color....If you can talk your mom into going to Hobby Lobby or another craft store you can find those "stick-on" eyes that have that glitter look to them like the other baits..

If you use these just use a little glue when you put them on and they will not come off...

Cooollll....sounds like a good plan to me.....Give it a shot, if you don't like it all you have to do is sand it back down and start over....:D

Bet it looks like a Rat-L-Trap. :smokin: NEVER use a belt sander or any other sander. Start with 400 Grit wet-dry and then go to 600. ALWAYS sand with water.

really? mine came out great, but i didn't apply pressure when sanding, just enough to get paint off.

Salty feel free to list the steps for us :help:

I just did. :smokin:

Fool, Bombers are so finely balanced that almost any modification will change the action and usually trash the bait. For instance, I took some eyes off a She Dog and glued them on a 15 Series Bomber. The bait would dive nose-down when it hit the water. Since I used epoxy to put the eyes on...I trashed the bait. Never sand with anything but water and always sand in-between coats to make sure the paint adheres. Sand before clear coating and sand in-between clear coats. It takes alot of tedious time when you do it right but, when you catch a fish, you get a special satisfaction out of saying..."Ha ha...I fooled your azz".

Heres a better pic...

So let me get this right, before i put my clear coat on it, i need to sand it with normal sand paper. Wouldn't that take the paint off??? :help:

Salty 10-04-2009 03:20 PM

Fool, please read post #19.

Wadaya mean? i use spray paint

eman 10-04-2009 03:46 PM

fool,
to do eyes get a 1/4 " dowel and a 1/2 " dowel . Use the flat end of the dowel dipped in paint to put the eye on the bait. let it dry then you use the smaller dowel to put the center dot in the eye. Or use the smaller dowel and a toothpick.

Do you mean to do that like when the bait doesn't have eyes already built on it? or to paint the eye use the dowel?

Thanks man

huntin fool 10-04-2009 06:52 PM

yes when lure doesn't have eyes use dowels. To paint the lures that have eyes use a tooth pick point to circle the eye then fine artist brush to fill it in . then you can use small dowel to do the center dot.

southern151 10-04-2009 09:10 PM

Hey Salty, did ya get an airbrush? If so, did ya get the Iwata?

I worked as a painter in the collision industry so, I may be able to help if ya'll get hung up. I've been out for a good number of years but think I still remember enough to be helpful.

huntin fool 10-04-2009 09:11 PM

If salty would answer my question i'd post a pic of the finished She dawg (not even close to the pic above that i posted) Looks way better

Gerald 10-05-2009 12:59 AM

Fool.....how are you holding your belt sander while sanding on a lure?

I have a vice big enough to clamp mine....up side down. This way I have a flat sanding area or can use the front end where it is rounded.

For the eyes on the bone color lure......maybe black circle with white or red center.

FlatoutFishin 10-05-2009 01:48 AM

Looks like fool will have a little time to perfect his lure painting skills. Enjoy the vacation bud!:D
