Normally I would be in a stand with the stick and string but since I am leaving on the 22nd for a week of bow hunting in Missouri I will make a teal hunt. Maybe even two.

Bluechip 09-05-2012 03:11 PM

I will be flying back from Canada on the 15th but plan to try and sling an arrow on the 16th.

Gerald 09-05-2012 03:15 PM

If this cool weather sticks around all next week.......I probably will be in a tree on the 15th.

If it is 75 F that morning......I'll wait for cooler temperatures. It is no fun when sweat is running down you back, before you start to climb up the tree.

I am not that "MAD" at them deer like I use to be years ago.

STELLY 09-05-2012 03:18 PM

Its gonna be tough because the teal are every where in the area but will deer hunt the weekends and teal hunt before work during the week..

Not as much as deer though.

And I want to mess with Sul...

latravcha 09-05-2012 09:20 PM

I have to wait till Oct 1st to sling sticks at deer so I will be shooting teal in the first 10 minutes of daylight then chase reds after that

BassAssasin 09-06-2012 07:51 AM

N e G g a please!! I have killed more deer than you will in your lifetime! :smokin: And duck hunting is 10x more work than deer hunting. Went put out feeder and camera and hung my climber 2 weeks ago. Took ALL of 15 minutes.

Once you have knocked down as many big boys as I have, it gets old. :D Don't get me wrong I love deer hunting, but it is probably 4th on my list behind ducks, turkey, and trout! I bow hunt hard in between teal and duck season. And hit the rut hard in the split. But i only shoot big boys!

I hunt north of Baton Rouge in St. Francisville. Only 2 areas in LA open before the 1st I believe. I used to have a lease right by Laredo, TX but too close to Mehico!

specktator 09-06-2012 10:32 AM

Shooting does is for sissies!! Now that's like trout fishing with live bait!!

BassAssasin 09-06-2012 10:46 AM

shooting does is for management. I dont go on outfitted hunts so killing a deer is still a rush for me. I can see how that would get old

yep i use both, draws the does in so we can kill them to even out the ratio. Our bucks never come near the feeders.

SGib 09-06-2012 10:53 AM

Does are Headshots only. I'm ready to bust some domes!!

specktator 09-06-2012 10:56 AM

BassAssasin 09-06-2012 10:57 AM

Thats worse than fishing with live bait at least with ducks you have to make em come in the hole in tree lounging you just sit by something you plant at a time of year when everything else isnt really growing and green around and they walk out to eat and you shoot em:p:p:p

I bet the bucks dont come near the food plots either huh???;)

you must not deer hunt or bow hunt for that matter, i enjoy duck hunting i just think that all the work that goes into a hunting lease year after year vs that of a duck blind there is no comparison

BassAssasin 09-06-2012 11:05 AM

i hunt river bottoms in arkansas not barren texas. its tough to get them to eat corn with all the oak trees around

specktator 09-06-2012 11:06 AM

In my area, first few days of bow season are your best opportunities to kill a big buck. No one has been messing with them for months. It's hard to pass on that first big nanny that comes struttin in to your feeder but it can pay off. Big bucks will come to feeders early in the season. I find I have better success in bringing them in because I don't use an electric feeder. I cut a hole in the bottom of a 55 gal plastic barrel and let it gravity feed and it holds about 5 sacks of corn. I think the commotion of electric feeder keeps the big bucks away. They are in a routine of doing the same thing just about every day. Once rifle opens, they are hard to find until the rut.

My guests usually thin out plenty of does for me.

I killed a few good ones on my lease in SW Texas last few years, but we let it go. Too close to Mexico and guys in it were shooting every buck that walked. I haven't killed a good one in LA in a few years. I have 3 over 130" from my lease in St. Francisville. We hold some big deer up there. Biggest about 150"

Check out this dude from a few years ago on one of my cameras. I had this camera up 300 yards from back door of my camp. That's at like 9am too. Hopefully he's still around. U can see the type of feeder I'm talking about in the background.

BassAssasin 09-06-2012 11:52 AM

That is an absolute Giant!

SGib 09-06-2012 12:22 PM

Goosepond Monster 09-07-2012 08:36 AM

Here in Indiana October 1st is the opening day of archery, unless you hunt in an urban zone, then the opening day is September 15th.

This will be my first year bowhunting, so I am pretty pumped.
