Sea-Trac Offshore 06-28-2012 04:41 PM

K2 is a great buy.

Armand16 06-28-2012 04:51 PM

yettis may hold ice for a long time but what are they insulated with? cement?

Ray 06-28-2012 04:54 PM

My brother in law bought a 65 qt K2. It leaked water, so they exchanged it.
Now the other one is leaking and the rubber feet came off when I slid it out of the truck.
They are easy to put back on, but if you don't see them come off, you will lose them.
They hold ice good, but there is an issue with it leaking water out the drain.

Rainman337 06-28-2012 05:09 PM

just bought a K2 for 250, well built and holds ice forever

I know the critics will pick this video too pieces but it may help you decide if you are on a budget.

Seems it wouldn't leak water if it held the ice. ;) :smokin:

K2 hands down

FF_T_Warren 06-28-2012 07:03 PM

ok started searching all around about a bunch of different coolers. and theres one called Too Cool by Marpac/yeti. looks just like a yeti only slightly different shape and looks like much more cost friendly. can anyone elaborate on this as to why yeti would be making a same quality cooler at a much cheaper price...if thats even the case.

btw i have a yeti and a k2. I prefer the yeti due to durability and seal of the lid. after standing on my k2 for a while bowfishing I noticed the lid not sealing as well on the ends. still holds ice good though. and the yeti seals so good that frequently it forms a vacuum so tight that I have to open the drain plug to let air in so that I can get the lid open. things a beast

Dang! I'll bet it does keep ice.

gasdad 06-28-2012 08:12 PM

I have a Yeti Roadie, keeps ice well but it's somewhat heavy empty. That being said it's an ice chest that should last you for a long time. BTW, an ice chest study was done in a non-biased bases and Coleman Max cold came out on top for price/keeping drinks cold for x-# of days.

MathGeek 06-28-2012 08:45 PM

I've got a couple of Coleman Extreme coolers that I bought when they first hit the market 5-10 years ago. They hold ice very well and are reasonably rugged. I haven't managed to damage either of them yet. I think they are the best you can do at the "Walmart" price point. If I ever manage to damage or destroy these, I will probably buy new Coleman Extreme coolers to replace them.

1fastmerc 06-28-2012 08:59 PM

If you want a real test on ice chest let Weedeater use em. He like to let mainly mine fly out the boat going down the road. But on a more serious note the Coleman Extreme is a good ice chest they just don't handle being hit by cars to well.

OK, time to come clean with an embarrassing story that demonstrates the robustness of the Coleman Extreme as well as the older 100-120 qt Coleman shown in the photo.

After catching these fish at the jetties with my wife and brother, we were headed back north on 27 when the trailer popped off of the ball. It scraped the safety chains on the ground and quickly ground them through.

I was watching the boat and trailer in the review mirror completely powerless to do anything. My brother declined my offer to slow his jeep and try and bring the rogue trailer and boat to a stop by gradually slowing the jeep. The trailer soon swerved into the oncoming (southbound) lane before swerving back to the right and into the roadside ditch.

The two ice chests with the fish and a lot of ice were riding in the boat the whole time. The lids popped open, but all I had to do was hop up in the boat and put some spilled ice back and close the lids. All was well with the ice chests and fish inside.

Love my yeti. And he's not lying about the vacuum.

Not trying to put down K2 but yeti is much higher quality.

I agree. K2 is a great chest and holds ice well but for durability and quality I like my yeti better.

Salty 06-29-2012 02:22 AM

Looks like Yeti is the official cooler of Salty Cajun.

Absolutely but it cost way more, and is heavy as crap. Don't get me wrong Yeti is an amazing cooler just way to heavy to lug around even the 35qt is ridiculously heavy but like you said its built like a tank!

K2 is very durable not as high quality as a yeti but def has the performance of a yeti at a fraction of the price and weight.

I agree 100%... I love my K2... I have a yeti as well but I can feel my yeti and k2 the same day with the same amount of ice and K2 has out performed.. My K2 is even black not the original white cooler

buddy ro 06-29-2012 06:59 AM

i love my K2 they are lighter weight than yeti for 30% less money. i abuse the heck out of mine

Sea-Trac Offshore 06-29-2012 07:55 AM

Marpac is Donovan Marine's model. They have many different boat items that they slap their sticker on. Never looked at them so do not know what brand chest it is that they use.

Same here, stand, sit, thrown, dropped, mine takes a beating and holds strong!

BIG RED 1983 06-29-2012 08:55 AM

got a cube 30 a few months ago and love it and i put that thing through hell and back and its amazing only problem is on k2 site they are always out of stock i prefer the cube series over the cyro series

speck cc 06-29-2012 08:58 AM

i have a k2 and love it... i also have 2 coleman extreme chests and have not been disappointed by them either, very good budget buy!

Yeh the cubes are pretty sweet I'm picking up a cube 55 soon

Asterisk-Rich 06-29-2012 11:28 AM

I saw button yesterday over here at work. He's usually on our yard once or twice a week.

Ray 06-30-2012 08:37 PM

K2 will form a vacuum like the Yeti, if the drain plug don't leak. They need to put a gasket on them, like Yeti.

I have 2 Coleman Extreme 5 day ice chests. They will not hold ice as long as the Yeti or K2. They are cheaper and hold ice about half as long as the high end coolers.

There is another high end company that builds custom coolers. Icy Tek, but they don't have a good sealing gasket on the lid like K2 or Yeti.

buddy ro 06-30-2012 08:46 PM

K2 was having problems with leaking at the plug but they have fixed that problem with a thicker gasket

Ray 06-30-2012 08:51 PM

Neither of the ones brother in law has had a gasket on the plugs.
He might have gotten them from a bad batch. Built on Monday.

fun w son 07-01-2012 09:48 AM

thanks for the info! i really like the yeti and k2, but i just can't see spending 300-400 dollers to save $10 worth of ice! i'm gonna go check out the "extreme's"

bjhooper82 07-01-2012 04:01 PM

To me it's really not about keeping ice longer it's more about the quality of the cooler. Even if you dont take good care of your cooler a k2 or yeti will outlast anything.

fun w son 07-01-2012 05:18 PM

True! And I'm tired of buying ice chest every summer

SaltyShaw 07-01-2012 05:38 PM

What size are you looking to get?
Like BJ says if you spend the money once you wont have to worry about it for quite sometime, it will take some effort to wear out a K2.

mriguy 07-01-2012 05:44 PM

The cube 55 looks sweet!

Yeah, it's a lot of money to spend at one time on a cooler but like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.
