Fly fishing
Here yall can talk about fly fishing rods, tips, tactics, baits, etc!
im curious right now, after my fly fishing trip, im hooked on it!! Question- at academy they sell a lil combo, would this work for bream fishing/crappie?? |
Check the weight of it first. I used a 12 weight Sage for Red fish..
Here a link from cabelas that explains it better . http://www.cabelas.com/story-123/sch...s+Guide+.shtml |
The Pfleuger Medalist model flyrod setup at Academy is awesome for bream and bass. I believe it is a 5/6 weight. Can't throw and large lures on it such as those "fly" frogs. I really only learned to work #8 and #10 topwater poppers well, and that's all I ever really needed to use.

huntin fool, i used to fly fish west fork a lot with little poppin bugs, bluegill and bass love em!!!

this is 50 bucks, would this be good for reds/bream? http://media.basspro.com/images/site/enlarge.gif http://media.basspro.com/images/site/zoom.gif This Fly Rod Starter Kit from Pflueger is a great way to get started in fly fishing at a price that fits any budget. The Fly Rod Starter Kit includes everything you need to get on the water quickly, 8', three-piece #5/6 weight fly rod, metal single-action fly reel, 50 yards of fly line backing, 25 yards of 6-weight fly line, 7'6'' 4x tapered leader, knot booklet and fly assortment with box. Manufacturer model #: PFYKIT2. |
That is pretty much what I got, except the reel is black and rod is dark green. What I learned is that I could just use 4# test on a small spool and make my own leaders. Learn how to tie what's called a "nail knot" and you're good.
Now for redfish...man that would be really intense. The problem I see would be that you wouldn't be able to throw big enough lures with that 5/6 weight. You need more like an 8 weight. This is solved by just getting a different rod for reds, and just switch out the reels. You can also just change your leader weight by how I mentioned above...saves lots of $$ when deciding on leaders...just get a 80-110 yard spool of whatever pound test and you are good to go. I've even used mine to catch spotted gar; I would use braided 65lb. test as leader and little spider-like flys with a treble attached. |
pick it up
Fool, gotta give it to you, I used to fly fish and even been to Colorado on some trout trips. Haven't touched it in years. I used to fish burn out bridge and calc. river for bream and bass with my pops. Brings a whole new perspective on fishing. Keep it up! You made me wanna pull the ol fly rod out and pratice in the yard!!
|
i plan on trying to run to academy and seeing what the details are on there rod combo..i really want an 8 which cabelas has an 8 that isnt too high so i may try
|
i got a white river bass pro special i think, aint bad for what i use it for.......which aint much.

poppin bugs
I used to make some of those poppin bugs when I was your age hfool I'd sit for hours whittling on those things. Pretty easy too, go to Hobby Lobby and get a piece of balsa wood (a 1" x 12" block will make a bunch of bugs) and some deco feathers (steal some thread to tie with and the biggest needle you can find from moms sewing kit), a pack of small heavy gauge hooks, some old spinner bait skirts for the legs(use that big needle to push it through the wood), sandpaper, paint, and lacquer.
Every once and a while I'll be digging through an old box and find one, a nice little piece of nostalga. |
