castnet size
 

Just curious as to what size castnet you guys use and how you feel about it. I had a 6' till my dog chewed it up and the wife replaced it with a 5'er. Amd I gotta say I feel like im pi**ing in the wind throwing it.im thinking about making the leap to a 7'. Never thrown one but I can open my 5'er good so im hopin the 7' wont be too much different.anybody have experience with goin from a 5-6ft to a 7ft. I think the extra will really come in handy for skrimps

I throw an 8'. Max size in reserve is 8.5' if my memory is correct.

Get an 8'. They are not any harder to throw.

I have always had a 6 and can sling that thing, but got an 8 last year and its pretty dang heavy and can't sling it that far but its good for throwing from a weir where you don't have to throw far. I like the 6 for casting for bait from a boat so you can throw it far.

Mine will mostly be thrown from the boat and with my 5' it reaches the end of the handline alot because its so light I forget to "toss" it. Gonna go by academy today and see how much heavier an 8' is over a 7'. Too bad they dont have a "test" area in the store

I can throw my 8 ft better then my 6 ft but not as long and as far. The 8 opens better for me. For shrimp I get the larger mesh size for less cull and faster sinking.

I have a 6 ft. and 7 ft. with 1.5 lb. of lead per foot and ½ mesh. And, I have also a 7 ft. with 1.3 lb. of lead per foot and 3/8 mesh. The 7 ft. is different slightly from the 6 ft. The 7 ft. you pull extra or two loops of the lead line (about 1 ½ - 2 foot each for 4 or 5 times) in your hand. As for the 6 ft. pulls the loops of the lead line about 3 times then I throw it really to open up pretty full circle. My method throwing is the same as the 6 ft. as the 7 ft. Many people have many different methods how to throw the cast net. No way to put the line in my mouth. It will surely eat my mouth and teeth from saltwater. You better do your work out with your cast net if you have 1.5 lb of lead per foot before going out on the water to cast net for skrimp so you won’t get WORE OUT!

The 1.5 lb of lead per foot is quite heavy. It sinks extremely quick like LIGHTNING.

Ive got an 8 and a 12.......the 12 is not fun to throw!!! BUT you only have to throw it a couple times

My technique is grab the cast net 2/3 of the way up, bite it. And place about 1/2 to 2/3 of the net in my right hand. Ive tried different ways but ive been doing this one so long its just easier but with an 8' im gonna have to grab it aboit half way or below which im assuming might be a problem.I like a fast sinking net but at the same time most the places I throw are shallow and If I cant throw the net that far I dont want to scramble trying to collect all the line before it hits bottom. Theres still more pros than cons I guess

An 8 is a total of 8 lb = 1.0 lb of lead per foot radius. It's a heavier than a 7 ft. You can see the label on the box at Academy that would say "1000 or 750". The 1000 is 1.0 lb of lead per foot radius. The 750 is .75 lb of lead per foot radius. The 750 is too light that I can't EVEN throw the net to OPEN up full circle. I know Academy and Wal Mart don't have a heavier than 1 lb of lead per foot radius. They have only 1 lb of lead per foot or less.

I like a 8' too. I find I catch better with a bigger net. It does wear you out faster.

For catching shrimp..... the 1/2" mesh is a lot better than the 3/8" mesh. You don't catch much bait or small shrimp, so the culling is much easier.

Im gonna look around and aee what the price difference is between a 7ft and an 8ft. Im probably gonna go with the 3/8" because it will be used primarily for bait.where else would I be able to find one besides Walmart and academy?

Do yall use the same technique for the 8 that you use on the 6? Everybody I seen throwin an 8 used the same technique but it was different than what I use. They used the "pinky" method.

I don't put the net in my mouth! make the grab and then gather under one finger at a time . Throw an 8 footer no problem.

I think im just gonna buy the 7' one for now, all the 8' ones I seen were twice the price. So Im pretty sure im gonna get the seven and practice with it.

Ill let you try my 12. Both hands, a shoulder and your mouth......and you still need abother hand!!!

If i can't catch it in the 8' it don't need to be caught.

Unless you have a commercial cast net license you are only legally supposed to throw an 8.5. Dont know if they will ever ticket you for it but just thought you might want to know

Cool - I like the 7ft a lot. When u get one, you can practice, practice, practice in your backyard as long as you can until you feel confidence in your technique cast net throwing with the 7ft then go out on the water then you won't throw it like a taco. Good Luck!

So after researching the nets for a while a guy made a pretty good point. he was using an 11ft net with 1/4" mesh. My first thought was what a,nightmare it eould be throwin in a school of Shad and having them get stuck in an 11ft net. But he says with the 1/4 they slide right out. It eould mean more culling but I find it would be easier to slide them back over then spend five minutes tryin to shake them out of my net. Just an extra thought if anyone else is researching nets

Well I got the 8ft. Wanted the 1/4" mess but had to settle for 5/8". Very pleased with it. I had to use a different technique than what I was using for my 5-6 but she opens alot better.makes wish I wouldve done this along time ago. Even being short throwing an 8ft is no problem. Hope this helps other people in the same boat
