Favorite/Most Unusual Catfish Bait

I know the classics (live perch, crawfish, gizzards), and the unusal (like soap?? and red hotdogs) but whats your favorite catfish bait?

We used to have slat traps in Bayou Ramos when we were kids, I remember this stinky "cheese" we would pack into the front corners of the trap...

Stuff came in a 5 gallon bucket from LaFluer's Dairy in MC.

Nasty, nasty :puke:

Cast net for some cut mullet, sometimes live crawfish, and gizzards.

I use cut pieces of Slim Jims at the neighborhood pond and catch channel cats w/ em. Also a good ole nightcrawler will do.

flounder_smacker 04-23-2012 09:32 PM

My grandpa always used live bream, but during duck season he would only use duck guts and fill the icechest. I've also heard chicken guts work real good.

I used cut eel before. For some reason they ones with the fins worked great and the ones with the little legs hardly caught anything

jbart 04-24-2012 08:03 AM

Live bream hands down......and baby bass are the bomb on flatheads

Duck Butter 04-24-2012 08:41 AM

Live bream for ops

Cut bait - skipjack is great, pogies good too

Market shrimp is real good too on the MS River

Have heard the soap thing, but I saw a show where commercial fisherman were using plain ol Ivory soap. I don't think just any soap will work, I wouldn't go out there with Irish Spring:) They used this because it was cheap and stayed on the hook. The other bait they were using for trotlines was .....those big marshmallows:confused:

I've always heard that Ivory soap is the only kind that works...though I've never tried it

Typically use whatever is available at the time...bream, crawfish, night crawlers, cut gizzard shad

wtretrievers 04-24-2012 09:03 AM

Ivory soap does work, used it years ago.

Big Country7807 04-24-2012 09:25 AM

Bullfrog Heads and the back Feet!!! Might not catch that many, but they will be nice! You will be suprised that some of the smaller ones will stuff that foot in its mouth too!

Big Country7807 04-24-2012 09:28 AM

When using live bream, where do you hook them? Through the Back?

Top Dawg 04-24-2012 09:52 AM

Yea. Right under the back of the dorsal fin

My Paw Paw used it on his trotlines in bayou Sorrell/Pigeon. I was the one cutting it up in the boat. Also he used Catalpa worms he raised back in the day.

Those are my favorite catfish baits, and make good baits for bream too. We used to catch em and freeze em in corn meal. Some people would say they would come back to life when you unfroze em, but never saw that. There could be a whole new thread on 'what people call catalpa worms':rotfl:
Uncle called em catawba worms, i have heard togger worms, katogger worms

One other catfish tip we learned is that when setting wooden slat traps it was best to set the throat down. Always heard to face it downcurrent and the fish would swim up and that works, but someone suggested hanging the entrance to the trap about one foot off the bottom (we tied a brick on a one foot rope, set it down and pulled it up til it got heavy) and the catfish will swim up into the trap. It doubled the catch

saute86 04-25-2012 07:18 PM

We use to use the cheese wrapped in panty hose but one of the best was spoiled pork liver. During the spawn we would leave a female full of eggs in our slat traps and never had a trap tht wasnt full of fish.

jbart 04-25-2012 09:10 PM

Forgot about the catalpa worms. My dad used to "turn em inside out" with a stick. Very good bait.
