2011 ford f250 mods.

I really need to get a programmer for this truck. I'm averaging 8mpg pulling our 24ft cargo trailer. It's been an expensive trip so far, probably gunna need another full tank to make it. Any suggestions?

swamp snorkler 02-14-2012 07:07 AM

Gas or Deisel?

I hear good things about Bully Dog on the Deisel side.

Keith_Stone 02-14-2012 07:10 AM

Hopefully you will sell all your products at the show then say the hell with it and sell the trailer to so you dont have to drag it home....LOL

weedeater 02-14-2012 07:11 AM

When I had my Dodge everyone said "Edge with Juice" not only a programmer but it gives you exhaust teamps and tracks other important info for you, this was even recommended by dealer

Dink 02-14-2012 07:16 AM

8 is about right for a new ford pulling.......I'm a Cummins guy, so I'm not on the powerstroke sites, but the newest best thing out there for us is the Smarty. Look it up

Check out Spartan Diesel Technologies. They are ford diesel only tuners. The 6.7 doesn't have a big enough turbo to put up big numbers like the 6.4, but they have a towing tune that should bump you up to 12 mpg towing. The biggest gain is getting rid of the exhaust and letting the engine breathe. They are not cheap.

jldsc 02-14-2012 08:09 AM

if its bran new give it till about 10-15 to get the rings good and seated...then switch to synthetic oil if you want to and check out H&S programmers...they are the only ones doing decent things on the new urea regen diesels....I run EFI live on my dmax and they wont even touch the 2011's...WHATEVER YOU DO STAY AWAY FROM BULLY DOG....very dirty tunes in there programing. all they do is dump the fuel for power and dont increase pump timing enough for the amount of fuel per tune. Fuel only tunes will leave distinct fire rings on the pistons an if ever a warranty issue its a give away to a service writer. Also look into SCT and TS performance, 2 other good ford tuners. And the only way your gonna get good mileage towing is to completely get rid of all the emisions crap...and i mean all of it, pcv, egr, urea injection, cat dpf and muffler!!

bjhooper82 02-14-2012 08:10 AM

You should have bought a Chevy!!!

jldsc 02-14-2012 08:14 AM

x2 on the Spartan, forgot about them.. actually about the best tuner for a ford is the Spartan tunes

Cold air induction & larger exhaust......Diesel has to breathe!!!!
Programmer is only gonna do so much, you gotta give it air!

jldsc 02-14-2012 08:37 AM

yea but dats a cummins...a lil piece of pvc here..a lil bit of cuttin there...take this trash off an WHAAALAAA 25 mpg....lucky bastids!!!

bayouchub 02-14-2012 08:44 AM

I have a spartan chip on my 2008 F250 (6.4 not 6.7) and also had the exhaust delete and a cold air induction installed. Made it a completely different truck. MPH went from 10 while pulling my boat to 15 and highway drive went from 13.5 to 16. The power difference was huge, it really makes that truck fly. I have been running this setup for 50,000 miles. I run the 210 Horepower track, I could bump it up but this setting was better for me as far as how comfortable I was with the truck shiffting and also how sensative the throttle is. I would probably have better MPG is I bumped it up to a faster tune.

latravcha 02-14-2012 08:52 AM

Cold air induction, get rid off all emissions and get a SCT programer.

my dad is gettin 20 in his have to ask what it is towing his camper i bet around 12

That's awfully low if you're talking about a diesel. My '11 gets 21 freeway, 15 city, and 16 towing a 6k lb boat on the highway. Got around 14 towing 10k once according to the lie-o-meter. I can't imagine what I'd have to tow to get 8mpg with the new diesel. Sounds like the mileage a POS Dodge would get while billowing black clouds of smoke and sounding like a whoopy cushion. :p

Edit: You may want to have your dealer verify you have the latest flashes that increase horsepower and smooth the 4-5 tranny shift as well as changing shift points on the others. My mileage increased after the TCM update.

Agreed, Micah told me he is getting 16-17 pulling his Triton from Houston to Lake Charles every weekend in a new 2011 6.7.

8 would be low even for a 6.4 which was horrible on fuel.

jchief 02-14-2012 10:28 AM

I have been researching this also. I have a 2006 6.0 F350 diesel. Get 13/14 all around and 11/12 pulling my boat and 9/10 pulling my 5th wheel.

Check powerstroke.org.

The SCT seems to be the most popular, but get a custom tune for it.

Dink 02-14-2012 10:32 AM

City of Lafayette purchased quite a few of the new f250s. Sent my buddy to powerstroke school for training. Instructor told him to expect to get 100k miles out if the engine before the cab had to come off for rebuild........100k!!!!????? Yep, you read that right!! Thanks Fed Govt regulations!!!!!

Ray 02-14-2012 11:51 AM

Banks Power. You get the whole package.
Chip, SS exhaust and intake.
And it does not void any warranty.
Banks is about the best, but not cheap.
They do a lot of testing before putting
anything on the market.

Whoever told him that is an idiot. It is very likely the best diesel motor ever produced. Ask any dealer how many they see in the shop for repairs. ;)

Dink 02-14-2012 01:50 PM

It apparently has more to do with the electronics and emissions

These are both still stock from the factory

I wonder which rear end gearing they have? I can see this being the case with a low gear ratio. On the new Fords, though, there's no need for low gearing unless you tow heavy loads constantly. The standard gear ratio can tow a house. With the previous models you needed lower gears if you towed with any regularity, but not with the new ones.

What about 2WD or 4WD, just to make sure apples are being compared to apples. 4WD lowers the mpg on any truck. Are the trucks that are getting 8-10 mpg towing, 4WD. And the trucks getting the better mpg towing 2WD?

jchief 02-14-2012 09:21 PM

Mine is a 4 wheel drive, but I don't think it makes a difference anymore. I do know it used too.

I am averaging 17.5 mpg and that includes my wonderful daily commute which to say is stop and go is putting it politely. Last time I towed my Triton I was getting around 16. Getting up to 22 on the highway going back and forth to big lake with nothing in tow… Oh, and I have a 4X4.

Mine is a 4WD CC King Ranch, and I carry 90 extra gallons of fuel in the bed. ;)

I had the updated tranny program. Gave me more HP and torque. Lowered my fuel economy 1 mpg. I get 12 pulling a 30 ft. fifth wheel camper and 10 in the mountains. I get 17 around home and 19.5 to 20.5 on interstate empty. I have the 2011 F-250 4X4 four door. Love it. Had 2003 6.0. about he same mileage just a lot more power. My lie-o-meter is usually within a .5 MPG from the calculator.

Only time will tell. Ford's newest diesel engine is just that new. Not enough service years behind this motor to say likely best ever produced.

Yep, and you stated both made the lower fuel mileage, especially when pulling. You are right, the ride is great, and they are very comfortable.
