Engine light is on.....Suggestions

I have a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe that I purchased new. The wife came home this evening and said the engine light had came on and it showed the transmission temperature at 165 degrees.

The car has about 83,000 miles on it and I have never serviced the transmission. Just wondering if anyone has encountered this problem. I'm not sure whether to take it to a mechanic shop or take it to a transmission place. I checked the oil and the level was fine and the oil didn't smell burnt.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Go to a local shop and have a scan done on it. It may have nothing to do with the tranny. Several hundred sensors that could set the check engine light off. May be as simple as a loose gas cap.

OK...she said when the light came on that the transmission temp screen came up and would not go away.

My wife has an 08 or 09 Suburban and pulling my camper the temp gets above 200. With a load it will run close to the coolant temp. Empty 165 doesn't seem bad. Too many gizmos on them new ones.

Not to ignore but, more than likely, its a sensor. Of course, this is only a guess. Quick scan will tell you and, I don't mean the Auto Zone type. Good luck and, I hope you have an extended warranty. If so, most independent shops will accept those warranties.

If your close to DeRidder take it to Smiths transmission best transmission shop around

My wifes came on in her tahoe, brought it in and come to find out it was a warning because her engine was about to jump time. Cars are getting smarter and smarter every year.

83k miles?? GM has 100k powertrain warranty, all of mine did(do) have the 100k warranty..I would take it in..

It's a government motors product. They all do it. Mines been on since about 5000 miles. Hell I get nervous when it goes off.

My wifes tahoe looked like a Christmas tree with all the lights once we hit 80k on it. Always sensor or computer. I put three computers in it. Think I had a lemon though I would start with the small things first

Put electrical tape over the light so it doesn't bug you.....if it still goes down the road, your fine

Most auto part stores will do a scan for you, and sell you the sensor.

Most auto part stores will do a scan, narrow it down to 15 possibilities and sell you each part until you find the actual culpret. That's why I recommended a shop over Auto Zone or the likes.

Bring it to any parts house they will run a diagnostics on it for free.

Harley123 01-17-2012 09:07 PM

Take it and get a scan done to see why the light is on and if it is something simple like oxygen sensor or something that you think you can change do it your self and if the scan comes back with several things that could be wrong take it to the professionals and let them fix it hope this helps

Perhaps it's the throttle position sensor. If you still have the code number, I can call one of my GM guys and get it translated a little better for you. Let me know.

Thanks. So far the light hasn't come back on but if it does I will take you up on your offer.
