Advise Needed!!!

Alright guys, I made my first trip to Lak De Allemes(SP?) today. I really didn't know what I was gonna get into. I soon learned that the reds were boiling, EVERYWHERE!!!!! The problem is, I couldn't get them to take to anything! I saw they were chasin shad and finger mullet. I caught some shad and mullet, via my cast net. Still nothing! I threw sand eels, bombers, spinners, rattle traps, plastic worms, top waters, etc... Basically, I threw everything in there but the kitchen sink and my tackle box although, the tacle box got REAL close!!!!:pissed:

What did I do wrong? I tried all different speeds and techs on retreival and presentations. I really believe that the only thing that would have gotten them in the boat would have been a bow, although, I did have one hit my transom while I was clippin along pretty good! I got some pics of the scales on my transom he left behind and I'll email em to somebody if they'd like. Pretty cool cuz another couple of inches and it woulda been my leg!

Anyway, what could I have done differently? Who wants to go out there with me? The volume of reds was unbelievable!

"W" will be along shortly to tell you how.

id like the pics

wlangl1@tigers.lsu.edu

as for the fish, ive found sometimes its hard to get them to bite your bait with that much bait in the water

and the day after a front they get really lock jawed

Oh yeah! I let them suckers roll as far as they wanted. I had less than a quarter oz weight above them and they were both of decent size. I watched em swim all over the place... no response.

I had em on a cork about a foot deep sometimes deeper. I say I watched em swim all over but what I really meant was that I watched em pull that cork all over the place.

Unless mullet started weighin 10+ lbs, turned brownish red and developed a black dot on their tail, I'm reasonably sure that they weren't mullet, although there were a good number of them amongst the reds.

W, it was amazing how many of them there was. A few were the illegal, mullet size but, most were 20+ inches. They were all up in that shallow water with a REAL deep muddy bottom.

Maybe if "free health care" was really free, Obama would be popular!:*****::*****:

I try to keep the better parts of SC free from the net bias but, if it carries over with some, then, so-be-it. I really hope no one takes my stuff in there too seriously.:grinpimp:

Capt. Matt Caire 08-31-2009 09:09 PM

Are u sure u were not spooking them. Had it happen today. tried to sight fish them and got in the ponds and sun went away. would only see them when they got close to the trolling motor. They didnt haul butt but got nervous and wouldnt eat until I put the Power Pole down and just sat there. Waited a few min and they started swimming around the boat, and picked which ones we wanted. The key is when you find a few fish close together let off the trolling motor and sit there for 10 or 15 min. Especially in clear water.

southern151 08-31-2009 09:09 PM

I've seen mullet boil. I know exactly what you are talkin about. I also saw MANY reds!...You know, red/brown fish with a black dot by their tail.

Yeah, they'd spook and I'd stop trolling. Sometimes, I'd drift, others, I'd drop anchor and wait up to 30 minutes. More often then not, you'd see em swirl when they got within 10 feet of the boat.

see, when i site cast i'll often spook them aswell..but as soon as i see them swim off, I stop the trolling motor and cast to the "area" that they just swam off from..98% of the time i get blow ups for this fish. works for me with topwater.

Capt. Ryan Rachunek 08-31-2009 09:31 PM

Throw a Pearl/Black Fatboy floater at em'....... :D

Ray 08-31-2009 09:38 PM

Fish the outside edge of the schools, don't drag the line thru the middle of the school.
If'n they ain't biting on live bait, they might not bite on anything.
If it was Ladyfish, they will bite on bare hooks. I saw that last week. They will hit a 2 lb. trout on a hook. Them lil thangs are greedy.

It may well have just been my luck. I tried everything I know, which isn't much.:*****: As far as live bait not working, I kinda thought the same thing. Maybe you and I have something in common with the fishin gig?:*****::cry:

My issues are with weather. Every time I stay home, the weather is flat calm.
Sat. I had to go to a party on Pleasure Island and the Sabine Lake, Sabine River and the GOM was flat calm.
The day before, lots of rain and wind. I suck at predicting fishing weather.
