Help! Deer hunting rifle

Need a new deer rifle. I want to get most bang for buck. I know of a 15 yr old weatherby vanguard 270 mag for sale in perfect condition for 550 but I don't know if it's worth it. any suggestions on any rifles under 500 that are reliable accurate and will last would be much appreciated

Red Devil 12-15-2011 02:22 PM

Dink 12-15-2011 02:27 PM

wtretrievers 12-15-2011 03:44 PM

rifles under 500 that are reliable accurate and will last

Good luck with that!!!!
Best bet is to find a used one for that kind of money, Contact Southern151, I think he still has a rifle for sale.

weedeater 12-15-2011 03:50 PM

savage is gonna be best bet, what caliber you looking for and I guess you are looking for gun only no scope package

BIGJ 12-15-2011 03:57 PM

IMO, I wouldn't spend 10 cents for a Savage.

iron man 12-15-2011 03:59 PM

Marlin XL7 in 30-06 or .270

duckman444 12-15-2011 07:24 PM

If it ain't a browning bar I don't shoot it. I have browning bar2 safaris in 30.06,270, 308, and 7mm. Great guns. All I shoot/collect. I ve had them for years with no problems. But 500 ain't gonna get it. Savage and marlin are junk IMO only.

wtretrievers 12-15-2011 07:35 PM

Everybody has there opinions, I don't own a savage but they're not the guns they used to be, they've come a long way, the newer models areVery, very
accruate.

will agree 100%, I don't see why people think you need a $1000+ gun and $2000+ scope to shoot a deer....I have a Marlin 30-30 with a$100 scope that I will put up aginst any gun on the market for less then 100yrd shot, sure I have a Browning BAR 270 and Browning A-bolt 270WSM but I will take my Marlin over them any day...... it all comes down to what you are comfortable with and put time in with, just my opinion ;)

Buddy of mine bought his son a .308 marlin express in the Stainless & laminate, I had the pleasure of being with him & sighting it in. That dude is impressive!!!!!!! It's a tack driver.

that will be next rifle I buy, very nice gun

BIGJ 12-15-2011 10:16 PM

I have shot Brownings all my life. Bought one Savage about two years ago and it is a piece of junk. It is a bolt action and hangs up... go figure. I will not spend another dollar on a Savage product. And thats not an opinion, that is a fact.

jchief 12-15-2011 10:20 PM

I have had good luck with the Rem 700 in 270

mikedatiger 12-15-2011 10:39 PM

You can get a brand new vanguard for less than $400. But, if I was buying a new rifle it would be a Browning.

If money is truly a driving factor, you can pick up a Remington 700 SPS Composite for less than $500 which would be a damn nice rifle. Can't go wrong with a 700.

Ray 12-15-2011 10:39 PM

I have had a Rem. 700 for about 30 years. Great gun. My dad bought it used and got cut over his eye and nose by the scope. Gave it to me after that hunt.

southern151 12-15-2011 10:39 PM

I've got a Savage 7mag that is dead on every time. Only draw back is, it will donkey kick ya every time! It is for sale but, that is only because I went to a 7 mauser that isn't for sale. Is put that Savage on 400+ yds and never think twice though.

if recoil is an issue, recoil pad and managed recoil loads. I have shot both the remington managed recoil loads and the corelokt loads in my 7 mag. I have the remington recoil pad and shooting the full load aint that bad. recoil loads compensate with less powder and a lighter grain bullet. Shot lake chuck ducks WWII era russian mosin nagant and that thing kicks like a mule.

fishin 12-16-2011 09:25 AM

Thanks for all the input. Ended up getting the rem 700 7mm. Got gun, scope mount and rings for 530 something. About to go sight it in now!

I wouldn't want to shoot a reduced power load. Get a gun shop to make you a muzzle brake for it. It will cost you $150-200, and will make that 7 mag kick like a .243. I got a 300wsm with a BOSS on it and my 10 year old nephew has killed 2-3 deer with it. He tries to tell me to give it to him and buy myself a new gun. Now, it does sound like a cannon, but just wear earplugs.

I have an A Bolt 300wsm with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x50. Bought 7-8 years ago for right over $1000.00. Look around on LA Sportsman and qqclassifieds.com and also pawn shops and you could probably find a good deal on a nice 2nd hand rifle.

x2 puts a hurtin on the shoulder after the first 5 shots. No wonder why the Germans hated that rifle.

duckman444 12-16-2011 11:58 AM

Or if recoil is a issue u could put ur purse down and change ur cotex. That sometimes helps. IMO. Lmbo

weedeater 12-16-2011 12:22 PM
