Sabine Island WMA
Anyone been deer hunting there this yr? I am goin tomorrow to buy a 45-70 and may go tomorrow or Tuesday to scout and wondering what areas seem to be holding deer over there, I have a boat and boots and dont mind walking but I plan to put in at Niblets Bluff and go up to the man made canal that runs North West about midway of the main island. Any help is appreciated.

Bring a gps. Heard people can get lost in there pretty easily.

hunted there this past week with my son. killed 32 squirrel and 8 woodies. Saw a couple of deer up brennams bayou. Plenty of acorns, so you'll have to find the fresh sigh and give it hell. Heard of a few deer killed. Some one supposely killed a real nice 10 pt. Careful of snakes. Killed a large cottonmouth sat morning.

If you don't get lost you won't be able to find your boat because it's gonna be gone gone gone gone gone like a pecone. Gone with the wind, gone.

Have the downed trees from Rita been cleared to get up that way? If so, swampy on the east side and mostly high and dry on the west side, after you get in there a ways. I hunted a few good spots on down to the south, but would be very hard to discribe the location. There are some good areas of oak trees over on the west side of the island..... just a longer boat ride. Keep an eye out for the hogs. I saw a 250+ lb one many years ago. |
Back when I was a teenager our family used to hunt farther north between a highline and pipeline. There was some good hunting in that area. I've been wanting to go back and hunt it again just never do. That's also the first place I went squirrel hunting and boy did I get lost. Not a good feeling.

If you are going to go in areas that have ditches to cross..... bring your hip boots.
Also, there is some tide movement to the water level. The water can change 6" to 8" so be aware if you go back into where the water is shallow. You could be pushing your boat to get it back out to deeper water and the bottom is usually soft in most areas. |
