Duck Cleaners Burns down ! !

The duck picker, Gordon, on Oyster Drive off of gauthier road across from abundant life fellowship burnt down this AM. Don't have any details but my brother in law just called me and told me. He was trying to bring our 3 limits of ducks there around 10 AM.

Ray 11-13-2011 11:15 AM

My cousin lives in the blue house next door. I will call and find out something.

Ray 11-13-2011 11:18 AM

7:30 am burnt down. With all the ducks from yesterday, and the money bag.

jchief 11-13-2011 11:19 AM

Sorry to hear that.

Is there still someone in Hackberry that cleans birds???

Ray 11-13-2011 11:19 AM

He lit a low fire under the wax pot and left to go dump the guts from yesterday.
When he got back, it was burnt down.
They are getting a dozer to push it down and will be starting to rebuild tomorrow.

ScubaLatt 11-13-2011 04:36 PM

how much money does he think he lost in the money bag? Hope he gets rebuilt soon. Do you know if he will clean birds in the meantime?

simplepeddler 11-13-2011 05:54 PM

As many birds as that man has picked, he should have a few hunters over there driving nails with him!

You appreciates oh so much a picker when there is none around! Makes the price paid seem like nothing.

ScubaLatt 11-13-2011 07:38 PM

I was thinking of getting a donation thread going for Gordon. I know that he would appreciate it and several of us use his service for our duck/goose cleaning. I will be happy to donate towards the cause.

What say you, Mods?

Also, are there any other duck cleaners in the Lake Charles/sulphur area in the meantime?

Ray 11-13-2011 07:42 PM

I am not sure what is going on. If he had insurance or not. But he told my cousin's husband he would start rebuilding right away.
He lost all his equipment, so I don't think he is going to be cleaning for at least a few days.

Lake Chuck Duck 11-13-2011 09:17 PM

There wasnt much to his little cleaning building. Should be rebuilt very quickly.

Kenner18 11-13-2011 09:38 PM

I will check at the camp we have a duck plucker we dont use . I will see if they will let me have it . If so we can get it to the man so he can get a leg up on his buisness.

Raymond 11-14-2011 03:07 PM

Duck picker said he would be back in operation on Friday. He was very appreciative of the new picker Trey dropped off. There were plenty of people helping cleanup the mess and it looked like they were going to start rebuilding today. Good on Kenner18 for thinking about his fellow man.

Heckuva show of humanity! While I hate to hear of such situations occurring, I truely enjoy hearing how a fellow man will extend a hand to pick another up!

Good job Kenner!;)

YellowMouth7 11-14-2011 03:23 PM

Great work Kenner

BigChaf 11-14-2011 04:23 PM

Gordan will really be able to get top dollar now to cover his losses, I'm sorry for his loss but the rent in New York City is to DAMN HIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kenner18 11-14-2011 05:11 PM

Have to thank Raymond for helping find the place couldnt have done it without him. Helping each other in a time of need is what life is all about. If more people would show acts of kindness this world would be a better place. Too bad the world isnt filled with the men and women of SaltyCajun, I think we have the market cornered on great people here.

Bluechip 11-14-2011 05:28 PM

Nice job Trey!! Random acts of kindness sure make a blessed day for all involved...

Do alot of people really pay to get their ducks cleaned? How much do people pay for that? I mean its not that hard to clean a couple of limits of birds... Obviously I feel bad for the guy and am glad he is gonna be back in business soon I just didnt realize it was such a big business

PaulMyers 11-14-2011 05:37 PM

Very big business!

Raymond 11-14-2011 07:37 PM

Bob, you have the same opinion one of my lease partners used to have. We shot over 1,000 ducks per year for several years and after the second year he dropped them at the picker! What is your time worth? Not to mention that duck lice gimme the hebejebies!!

Them duck lice like beards for some crazy reason. I dont like em either Raymond.

ScubaLatt 11-14-2011 08:07 PM

Gordon charges $3 for ducks and $5 for geese if I remember correct. If he averages 200 birds per day for 60 days then that is sure big money. I just consider duck pickers another cost of hunting - just like leases, shells, fuel, dekes, etc. The money exchanged is put back into the economy to work.

well if I ever am lucky enough to get on a lease where we kill birds like that I will bring mine to one too but until then I will be cleaning my own and watching out for my beard

ScubaLatt 11-15-2011 12:36 AM

During the 2000-2001 hunting season we took 1583 ducks to the duck cleaners. At that time Gordon was working with another guy south of town off of Elliott road I think -- the neighborhood with roads like Flounder, Speck, etc. We hunted west of Gum Cove on a school board section and had 4 jam up blinds. That was definately the best season of my life!

joshdomingue 11-15-2011 07:21 AM

We wax our birds, but i've left some on oyster Drive when I was in a time pinch...... nice to have when you need it thats for sure!!

Dang Scuba, yall paid $4749 (assuming $3 a duck), thats pretty extreme! I think by the last few weeks of the season I would be cleanin my own birs lol

Think it was $2 back then. Still a lot of money. There were 4 blinds: Blind #1 killed 478, Blind #2 killed 364, Blind #3 kiled 316 and my blind killed 425. Each paid their own cleaning fees. If you look at it that way it was still a lot of money but split between several guys. Wish I has set up the lease as a corporation and taken advantage of tax write offs but did not know about that back in my younger years.

Super Spook 11-15-2011 01:46 PM

Awesome of you to do that Kenner! Gordan is a good dude. I bring my birds to him during the week when I have to get to work. I think he is at $6 or $7 a goose actually. Man I hate to hear his place burned.

Kenner18 11-15-2011 03:52 PM

Dropped off about 100lbs of wax to Gordon today. And they are working on the new building. Hopefully he will be on his feet soon.
