Empire on Sunday

Bought some baits today and was just wondering what everyone thought I should try. I got some DOA shrimp, sand eel jr's, some top water baits, and some bayou chubs. Any ideas on what to use and did I not get something I should have?

Montauk17 08-19-2009 09:05 PM

Never fished there before, but you can't go wrong with any of those baits. Maybe some gulp swimming mullet for flounder and reds, maybe some gold spoons. If your mainly going after trout, any of those baits you bought will work fine. For the DOA try rigging it about 2' under a rattle cork.

Mediumheavyaction6'6 08-19-2009 09:07 PM

Actually, I did get some gold spoons. I forgot to mention those. What does the cork do and do you have any idea why it works so well?

Montauk17 08-19-2009 09:13 PM

Suspends the bait, sometimes trout will suspend instead of being on the top or on the bottom. When im having a hard time catching, sometimes the cork is what they want. If you get the rattle corks it makes a clicking sound that sounds alot like a scared shrimp. I normally use a sparkle beatle under a cork, but the DOA will work fine....there just so expensive for what you get. You can pick up a 10 pack of beatles for about 2.50

Mediumheavyaction6'6 08-19-2009 09:15 PM

thanks a bunch for the info. hopefully i will have some pics to post after the trip:D

Montauk17 08-19-2009 09:32 PM

can;t be more right... i caught alot of trout with the "cocahoe minnow" in all black with chart. tail and all glow with chart. tail.... caught about 600+ in 5 days... alotta small one's and alot of white trout (which we used for bait) for dem BIG NASTIES.... poppin cork does immitate (SP?) a wounded or scared swimp..... they go crazy over them... Good luck and post a good report and awesome pics when you get back..

specktator 08-20-2009 05:36 PM

everytime i fished empire with one of my buddies who likes to fish down there, we limited on trout on black cocahoe minnow with chartreuse tail on 1/4 or 3/8 oz jighead. just takes me 5 hours to get there from lafayette, so i only go like once or twice a year.

Jordan 08-20-2009 05:45 PM

true that !!!!

Mediumheavyaction6'6 08-20-2009 09:03 PM

QUOTE=Jordan;34556]Well guys and gals, if there was one word I can use to sum up this past long weekend rodeo (wed-sun) it would be awesome. I got to meet a good buddy of mine, Capt Matt Caire. Real down to earth guy. Had a blast fishing with family and friends. Caught roughly 500 trout and 30+/- reds over 30 lbs and about the same with black drum. Got knocked off the board at the last minute with my redfish. Got beat by .04 lbs.... .04 LBS !!!!!!!!! are you serious ??? I was hot, but cooled down with the awesome drinks at the marina restaurant and all the hot ladies running around... All in all, it was an awesome experience and im fo sho doing it again next year !!!![/QUOTE]

the only reason you ever have to pop your cork is cause its windy and you needa take slack outta your line and it helps...the poppin cork is 10 percent truth and 90 percent BS..

Sorry I didn't see this when it was going to happen. Those are my home waters. Bay Bastian and the Shell Island washouts are best for trout this time of year. Bayou Cook for reds. I miss home when I think about the fishin' there.

Jordan 09-04-2009 08:36 AM

sandy, we need to get together and talk about empire... thats my home waters also.... bay bastian is where i caught my 4th place redfish in the last tourney.... 37+ lb bull red !!

For sure dude. I caught the largest red of my life on New Year's day near the mouth of Bayou Cook at Bay Bastian. The second washed out camp dock from the mouth. That was my buddy F.S.'s camp before Katrina. Great place for winter fishing. Those bruisers hold near the pilings there. Better have your 50lb power pro ready or they'll wrap you in the pilings.

Our old camp was the last one on the left in Bayou Cook before you hit the mouth into Bastian. It went in Danny in 1997. :(

Jordan 09-05-2009 08:44 AM

that waws back in the day... i didn't pay too much attention to camps... just wanted to hook up on some hoss'es... and i did !!!

coachlaw 09-05-2009 11:03 AM

It was sad for me to see the area again this Summer. So much of the marsh is but a memory buried under 3 feet of water now. 90% of my money spots are gone, but I still manage. There's only one camp left in Bayou Cook :(

To quote Margaret Mitchell, "A way of life . . . . Gone with the wind."

Jordan 09-05-2009 12:11 PM

our camp is in bayou maraguar ?? Hang a hard right out of the empire canal from the locks and head due northwest then there is a cut on the left hand side of the bay and u hang the bank in the cut, it zig-zags and makes a hard right.. (gotta almost stop the boat to turn it) then go through a bay and its on the left... if your out that way and see a camp with american flag and the skull and cross-bones flag, you've found it... its out by the flares
