Fish Taco Recipe
Just looked at SaltyShaws post and I am going to make those tacos tonight:)
Went to Islamorada a few years back and that was the big thing, but they used mahi mahi and seems like they used a beer batter for the fish and then had a cole slaw type dressing with shredded cabbage. It was purty good. I use Louisiana fish fry for my fish, what are some other good tidbits of info for making fish tacos? Dang I am hungry:help: |
Just made some last night with red snapper. I used a lime juice based marinade. Grilled the fish and served them in corn tortillas with a roasted tomatillo sauce and fresh shredded cabbage. If interested in details let me know I'll post um.

Fish Marinade in this Order
Salt Lemon Pepper Dill Garlic Powder Paprika Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice over the top (1 lime) The longer it sits on fish the better Grill the fish on a high heat about 5 minutes on each side depending on thickness of filet. Tomatillo Sauce Roasted tomatillos (6 or so) One roasted jalapeno Half a red onion Fresh cilantro (to taste) Whole avacado Lime juice (half a lime) Minced Garlic I roasted the veggies on my stove ( I have a gas stove). Remove the skin of the tomatillos and jalapeno. Put all ingredients in blender and pulse until a creamy sauce. I used corn tortillas that I roasted on a cast iron griddle on my stove. Cut up some fresh cabbage and used that as a garnish. You can not go wrong with this recipe. Trout should work just fine as a substitute. Enjoy |
Try a sweet salsa on fish tacos.
I like mango /corn salsa |
I forgot that I removed the seeds of the jalapeno as well.

1 medium avocado mashed
1/2 lime, juiced Try this sauce. It's like Serranos in BR 3 tablespoons sour cream 2 1/2 tablespoons mayonaise 1/2 teaspoon cumin 1 tablespoon cilantro, chopped |
I am going to make a sweet/hot sauce and a more tomato based salsa type sauce also. My neighbor has a lime tree that just so happens to be dropping a few limes in my yard every week:grinpimp: Guy is a great neighbor, earlier in the year the satsumas were falling in my yard:rotfl:
Gonna sorta steam the shredded cabbage just to make it a little tender and then will have some poppyseed dressing for that on the side. Grandma used to make coleslaw with that stuff and it is perfect. \ |
:grinpimp:Batter:
1 cup flour 1 bottle dark beer salt and garlic powder Baja sauce: 1/2 cup plain yogourt 1/2 cup mayo 1/2 onion diced fine 5 to 6 roma tomatoes diced about 1/2 to 1 cup of salsa (your choice) 2 tbsp of minced garlic 1 tsp of cummin Mix all together Corn tortilla: either microwave for a few seconds or pan fry in a lil oil --Not to long you don't want it crunchy.. Corn tortilla, piece of fried fish, sauce and shreeded lettuce or cabbage, with a squirt of lime juice... Very good... |
Got about 3 stories going here, so
1. Just made the things with trout and they were awesome, had to cook em early cuz wife was coming in from Fl and my mother was bringing my son back to me.. 2. Bout to throw in the fish and wife says she has some 'bumble bee snapper':rotfl: I say 'beeliner snapper', yeah thats it! Her and her girlfriends were at the dock and somebody had a cart full of em yesterday and she got a bag full of filets (not sure what happened to get fillets, but what happens in Fl stays in Fl.. as long as you bring back filets!) 3. Made a side dish I have been wanting to make, and it is the best and simplest thing ever. I boiled some small new potatoes. Cooled em down and then smashed them pretty flat, stick them on a baking dish, put some olive oil on the top, seasonings and parmesan cheese, throw them in the oven at 450 for 30 minutes, it is incredible! Made a dozen of them and could have eaten 2 dozen! |

Be careful with the limes.........lemons don't get ripe until Dec. The limes could be very bitter this time of year. |

The key is to garnish them
With raw onions, fresh cilantro, avocados, radishes and a little bit of lime juice. |

Either sweet or savory on mine. We use a locally made habanero, mango and pineapple salsa or my wife's homemade red salsa. It's some good shidizzle!! That's about the only way my wife will eat fish, so I cook it like this alot. I usually use grilled or blackened fish. It's whatever's in the freezer. Dem Skrimps grilled or blackened ain't bad either on a taco!! Make sure you got a cold Corona or Dos XX w/ it. |
