my opinion is garmin. i buy 1 every 3 years not because they break but because i like to upgrade. never had one problem with them. i just got a colorado 400t with the 3-d mapping and it is the best unit i have ever used. its kind of pricey but you can find good deals on the net. but the lower grade models work great too.

Garmin
I use a garmin map 70cx (i think). Color screen with the works...I would like the colorado. Looks like a good unit. I don't think you have to buy a topo map with the colorado??

Problem solved
W, you need to get a fixed unit. With a handheld, you are too far away from the satellites. It keeps searchin' for signal thus eatin' the batteries. If you could get a ladder and attach it to your console rail....your problem would be solved. :)

You may be able to change the update time from 1sec to 10sec that will help also.

I got tired of replacing batteries in my hand held Lowrance H2O; Now I run it on external power cord and just keep the batteries in it for back-up or emergencies.

I wanted to bring this thread back to the top, becaues I'm looking for a new hand held also....Do any of you guys know anything about the Garmin Oregon 300? Thats the one I'm looking at right now.
|
I've had a cheap little Magellan Explorer for a couple of years now and I can go a whole weekend on 2 AA batteries with some juice to spare. I've used it up to 60 miles offshore to little pot holes in the bay and it hasn't let me down yet.

I have a Magellan and it works great....Batteries last a long time....I'm just looking for something with mapping and for it to be a little easier to store way points.

Your right they do burn batteries ( IFINDER ). But I use one and as long as I keep it plugged in it works great.
I havent used any other so cant say that its the best. Its real convenient popping it in and out of its bracket.
