Looking for some advise

Recently moved from the Lafayette area to Lake Charles. I sold my last boat 2 years ago and am currently in the market for a new one. I used to fish the shallow marshes around Leeville and Golden Meadow. I have been out on Big Lake a few times and I know it is a whole different animal.

I was wondering if anyone had any advise on a boat the would take chop good and still allow me to get into rather skinny water when I head back towards the SE. I have two boys now that are starting to get alittle older and will start making trips with me soon, so I want to find a boat that still provides a stable and dry ride when I have them with me. Any advise from people that really know this area would really help.

Price range?

Keith_Stone 06-06-2011 03:02 PM

30K to 40K is where I would like to be for a new one.

I have read some of these thread about Haynie, and I really liked what I read about them but I really could not find any specifications on the boats anywhere.

Also look into the frontier 210...good boat and floats pretty shallow. Made by the original kenner builders, takes the chop good.

Never been on one but those black jacks sure look nice

Montauk17 06-06-2011 03:24 PM

Yeah black jacks seem to get more and more expensive every year. I think they are close to 60k now.

I am flexible with the price mid 40's really where I will end up I figure, just do't want to go crazy spending 60k on a boat.

Montauk17 06-06-2011 03:36 PM

PM W he has the biggest and baddest haynie in the whole world. :D

look at skeeter or blazer bay. 20skeeter bay with 150 yamaha fourstroke runs around 32ish. good speed around 56mph and a nice dry ride. plenty of boat for big lake and can fish 3 comfortable. the 22 blazerbay is a nice boat also. you can get them with a 20'' transom and you can run the yamaha sho which is the baddest outboard on the market right now. haynies are nice also but someone said there is a 16 week wait so dont know how soon you wanted a rig.

Skeeter makes a nice bay boat. My dad has a zx22 and it hauls azz. The zx20 is nice, but not alot of space inside compared to other brands.

"W" 06-06-2011 04:44 PM

Dont not buy a boat 20 or 22ft boat with a 150...Make sure you get at least 200 or better.........Most guys I know buy a boat and its under powered...

Montauk17 06-06-2011 04:55 PM

20 footer with a 150 is not underpowered. 22 foot needs atleast a 200.

Yeah I saw a 2010 skeeter ZX 22 Bay online it was in Florida. It was a demo used for a tournament. It had the SHO 250 Hrdayulic jack plate, trim tabs. The wanted 43K for it. Really nice looking rig. It looks like the sides are pretty low in that boat, didn't know how good it would take the rough water.

It does fine in rough water, unless you a running with a crosswind then you will get wet no matter what boat. Head on or quartering the waves is no problem. We had it in some 3-4 footers in toledo bend this spring running 40mph no problem. Gets even smoother at 50mph,but gets a lil air. :D My dad has a non hpdi vmax 225 and it runs 65mph with a light fuel load. It also floats in 10-11" of water.

flounder_smacker 06-06-2011 05:21 PM

the zx20 bay is rated for 150. i used a buddys in grand isle last year and i really liked it. was great on fuel also.

Keith_Stone 06-06-2011 06:49 PM

Thanx for all the help and suggestions. I realy like the ZX 22 but I am gonna try and PM a few of the People on here who have the Haynie. Like the look of the boat and the fact you have some say so designing the lay out..

flounder_smacker 06-06-2011 07:03 PM

you'll like the haynie but it is a rolled edge boat and dosent have the nice finish like the cap boats and the cap boats have more storage.

Rolled gunnels are much easier to clean though.

Take a look at the the 2170 rolled edge blazer bay r the 2200 with the liner blazer bay. Same hull. Just 21 is rolled edge and 22 has insert. Both r very nice. I'm getting the 2170

agree.....I wouldn't call my boat underpowered but I do beleive it could use the 200 and would be more efficient.

Talked with over 4 dealerships before I bought mine and all 4 talked me out of the 200 :pissed: Oh well.

But I'll give you a strong recommendation for the Frontier. Great boats....little cheaper than its big brother Blackjack.

Haynie great boat too! I really like the Blazer Bays also.
