Reel lube

I'm needing advice on the best lube to use on your reels. I have some that need a little tlc.

"W" 05-22-2011 08:08 PM

get the Shimano Oil............Best

When talking with Shimano they said a lot of repaired reels they repaired had Hot Sauce in them

I use Shimano oil only....Works

jlincecum 05-22-2011 08:10 PM

I also use the quantum hot sauce and keep a bottle of reel magic in the boat. Reel magic is some good stuff

X2 I use both....reel magic really works well for keeping mono limp.

Reelman 05-22-2011 09:00 PM

"W" 05-22-2011 09:02 PM

I see alot of guys rinse there reels off after use..........This is the worst thing you could do..
#1 Reason....Traps water
#2 Reason....Pushes Saltwater deeper
#3 Reason....Add moisture inside moving parts
#4 Reason....Rust

I hold them upside down if that helps and hang them up to dry......lol never thought about it that way though

How much would it cost to get some chronarchs cleaned and all the bearings changed. I got a bunch of them that are just completely wore out.

evis102 05-22-2011 09:53 PM

TG's Rocket Fuel best by far.

PathfinderNI 05-22-2011 10:12 PM

ReelX

Capt. Bill Lake told me several years ago that was what he uses. I've been using it since then.

flounder_smacker 05-22-2011 10:16 PM

i find hot sauce works best. have to remember to degrease the bearings before re-oiling. adding more oil to old dirty oil will make it 10x worse. when you put new oil dont put more than 2 drops per bearing i put one with hot sauce. washing rods and reels with fresh water helps but if you dont clean your reels at least once a year they will corrode quick.

Whats the best thing to do after a fishing trip? I have always just sprayed them with a hose minimizing the direct shot to the reels.

Nothing.....if you want whip down with light wet rag ....

I never do anything with mine.... I might hit them with reel magic spray.....

I clean my reels once a year ...

Have one core I have used for 2 years now and just changed all the bearing a month ago...

This is some good stuff..... I have 2 bottles and use it from time to time

longcast 05-23-2011 07:40 AM

I have been using reel butter. Seems to work fine

Gottogo49 05-23-2011 08:53 AM

One other thing that the Shimano maintenance tips didn't mention is to clean and oil the roller bearing in the side plate. The rollers are stainless but there are some springs inside that can rust and stick and the handle will turn backwards.

Reelman 05-23-2011 08:56 AM

I will clean and repair for 20.00 plus parts. This week will change to ceramic for same price as standard bearings while supply last.

evis102 05-23-2011 03:33 PM

I had 2 Cores get holes in the frames in less than 6 months. I sent them back to Shimano and they said there warranty does not cover corrosion. They did however do a one time swap for new reels that I sold. Curado is the only baitcaster I will use in saltwater. And yes I clean my reels. Every 3rd trip or so I break them down to there smallest parts, clean, oil and reassemble. I pretty sure it was all the wade fishing that got the Cores.

LaAngler 05-23-2011 03:50 PM

i've been using reel magic on the water and rem oil when i get home, been happy with how the chronarchs are holding up

i also re apply shimano drag grease once in a while

evidrine 05-23-2011 03:55 PM

Damn, Ive just been useing the Industrial strength Lubricant we have here at the shop. Despite the strong smell, it seems to do well for me. I 2nd that about using just a little.

evis102 05-23-2011 03:56 PM

Reel Magic will remove greese and protective coatings. Like any penetrating oil it has things in it that make it harmful to the life of your parts.

Duck Butter 05-23-2011 04:06 PM

What about refurbished Shimanos?:D

I agree less is more, same with cleaning a gun

My oldest Core has an area when you open to your breaks that is corroided a little but all the rest are fine....But I dont wade with them either

BossHog 05-23-2011 04:32 PM

Everyone of my MGs have corroided and shimano keeps sending me new ones

the instructions manual that came with my last chronarch said to lightly mist outside of reel with fresh water to remove salt before lightly oiling

i don't hose the reel hard, mostly just the rod

i just spray it on the handles and worm gear if salt dries on my reel before i get back in

flounder_smacker 05-23-2011 05:19 PM

i find reel magic makes fluorocarbon brittle. i started spraying the line when reels were put up to keep the line limp. made cx premium brittle and lots of memory. regular mono it works great.

evis102 05-23-2011 05:48 PM

I hear a new chronarch is coming out. I plan to give one a try. I may even try some Boca Bearnings with UDL. Its a lube coating that requires no oil. As long as the seal keeps the saltwater out it should work great.
