Braid

What's the best choice for baitcasters?

Hopedale Hustler 05-20-2011 06:02 PM

I like power pro...but they say suffix has some good stuff out

mcjaredsandwich 05-20-2011 06:06 PM

When I used braid, it is either 20 or 30 lb powerpro. I do not know if anyone else experiences this, but when I try to make a good hard cast with braid it seems to hit a certain distance in flight and backlash no matter how much I try to not let it happen. If I make a nice easy mid distance cast, no problem. It is only when I try to make those far casts.

I just hover my thumb over the spool and I can chunk the mess out of mine, but your braking system has a big part in that

SaltyShaw 05-20-2011 06:30 PM

20lb PowerPro all the way.........love that stuff!

Sufix braid 832

boatdriver 05-20-2011 06:52 PM

Suffix or FINS Windtamer. They are very, very similar. I have used the same Suffix on my Cronarch for the last 6 months. Haven't changed it yet. I do suggest 20 lb. It casts farther than the 30 lb. You can also hold a little more on the spool, partly because it is 6 lb mono equilvalent.

Gottogo49 05-20-2011 06:57 PM

Do y'all tie directly to the lure or use a leader? florocarbon? favorite knot for braid?

I use 20lb Berkley Big Game Mono it works just fine........not sure of the name of knot I use someone showed it to me so I'm unaware of the name sorry
They have some videos on YouTube that are pretty helpful

fishinpox 05-20-2011 07:35 PM

20lb power pro 15 lb fluro leader no breaks engaged on reel I can cast an entire spool out of a core 50mg

Gotta go with the new Suffix 832. Fantastic line. IMO it's softer than the FINS. Have been using it for about a month and love it.

Montauk17 05-20-2011 07:40 PM

Suffix 832 is the shiznit! Use a small spro swivel with 20lb floro leader. I never could get use to the leader knot going through the guides. A guide told me a nail knot works well, but never used it yet.

Light action rod , learn to use no breaks with the tension knob really loose and take all factory grease/ oil out of the reel n put quantum hot sauce

Lol true . . . . but 50lb? thats a little overkill huh? i have hustled 15lb reds in with a citica on a medium cumara with 20lb giving it no slack with no problem never lost a fish due to popping the line since my switch to braid with a 20lb mono leader

When u r fishin a redfish tourney the point is to get the fish in the boat fast no matter what so u don't over stress the fish which in turn gives the fish a better chance to stay alive in the livewell which ='s $$$$$

Exactly mike, the less stress you put on them the better they do in the livewell. And i know teamxxl are fishing redfish tournaments.

Just asking out of curiosity not knocking . . .

iron man 05-21-2011 12:49 PM

No braid at all. We have lost more baits and fish than ever before with braid. Making the switch bake to mono. Oh and we USED 20-30 pound power pro. Never again.

 Mono is no way shape or form stronger than braid. Mono does work better with topwater and other treble hook lures though.

***? This makes zero sense . . . . . unless you were using way to heavy of a jig head and draggin the shat over reef all day
Have fun with your mono and casting 10 feet from the boat

We salt and fresh water fish with braid. We have lost more fish and more baits due to braid snapping either next to the boat or when we cast and the reel locks. We fish around cypress knees and trees and in duck ponds for reds. We need to respool our stuff for the bass tournament we got coming up, this time with mono. I may be young, but I ain't dumb.

You might have got a bad spool of power pro, happen to me once. It had a weird color to it and broke when it should not have. That is the reason I switched to suffix, have not had a problem what so ever. The 832 is SUPER smooth, hardly and guide noise and cast like a dream.

I agree.

weedeater 05-22-2011 04:19 PM

1fastmerc loves him some fluorocarbon, seen him go through a full spool in one trip. I use 30lb power pro and so far no problems and thats fishin river, the bend, saltwater and the marsh, I just trim alittle extra off when i change baits so it don't fray

jchief 05-22-2011 04:25 PM

I have used many braids. Recently tried the new suffix and like it. It takes a little while to get "broke in" but then it performs very well. I use 30 lb on my carolina rod and 50 on my grass rake. I still use mono salt water fishing and for spinnerbaits, crankbaits, wacky worm, etc.

I use Power Pro saltwater fishing because of the reefs and other sharp obstructions underwater. I had to use one re with mono on it yesterday and lost way to many lures. I've had very good results with power pro.

huntin fool 05-22-2011 04:43 PM

Regardless, it's a proven fact braid is much better than mono. With bass fishing, I prefer mono with certain baits, and braid with other. Reds I use straight braid, and specks I use Mono, with fluro leader.
