Haynie 24 HO Motor

I am looking at ordering a new Haynie tomorrow. What is the board’s general thoughts on this boat and the following engine options:

Yam - 300 offshore 4 stroke
Merc - 250 Optimax
Merc / Verado - 275 4 stroke
Merc / Verado - 300 4 stroke
Yam - 250 SHO 4 stroke (this one has a 20 inch shaft and most folks say to stay away from it with a Haynie)

Speed, dry ride and a reliable motor are important to me.

I was told to stay away from the verado on that boat... The group that I spoke with said either optimax or the SHO.

Montauk17 01-13-2011 11:46 AM

I would get the new yamaha offshore 300. Same powerhead as the SHO with more power and the 25" shaft. DO NOT buy a verado.

I heard the SHO would not work on that boat becuase it is a 20 inch shaft. I really would hate to go back to a 2 stroke again.

Thanks for the input. I saw an 24 HO at the boat show with the 300 offshore on it. I would guess that boat would probably get close to 70mph?

65mph for sure. What is nice is you would be able to cruise at 45 or 50 and get good fuel mileage. I work for a merc dealer, but I prefer yamaha :D

It is not as heavy as the Verado's either, only around 560lbs.

Do you know if I can get electronic controls for the yam offshore motors? My 300 Suz has electronic controls and I really like being able to put the throttle down and not deal with it again.

CK, my uncle has the F250 with the digital contraols.... REAL SMOOTH !!!!!

I have heard that they ride great. I am going to over to Chris Marine in south Texas tomorrow and take a test drive.

Do you know what his top speed was with that setup?

Jordan 01-13-2011 12:01 PM

he has a 24' skeeter bay boat.... with the F250 with digital controls, he gets about 57 top speed and 36-39 cruising...(his numbers, not mine) i rode in it, it had awesome throttle response and alot of gitty-up

Yes yamaha has the fly by wire controls for that model, and they are very nice.

22ft blackjack w 300 verado 69mph im sure even thought that haynie is 2 ft longer than the bj its a rolled edge boat which is lighter im sure with a yammy 4 stroke offshore 70+ in that boat . when i buy my blackjack i will put the yammy 300 4stroke on it

PaulMyers 01-13-2011 02:41 PM

When you go see Chris tomorrow, just ask him. I'm sure he has numbers for every combination. You can think of. Even tell you the best prop setup.

"W" 01-13-2011 02:55 PM

My Opti 225 goes 60mph easy and tops out around 64mph

If you put a 250x your looking at 72-easy

cmdrost 01-13-2011 03:35 PM

I used to fish out of one that had 250 suzuki. It topped out at 61 or 62. No way does the 250 opti give you 72!

My personal opinion is you can't go wrong with any of the 5 you have listed. With the SHO, you just need a big jack plate that they will mount a little lower to compensate for the 20" shaft. You'll prob have to play with it alot more that you would the 25" shaft motors, but thats up to you.

you right...just text chris...he said 65 max....all depends on how you build it

Correct! When I was building one last year, Chris' advice was to allocate more weight to the rear which would increase top speed. Having said that 65 is plenty fast enough to throw your stomach for a loop as evidenced first hand from riding with "W". He would go 65 in The Perfect Storm. Thankfully he can't go faster :help:

24 HO with 225 Pro XS

My Haynie has it 63 with 2 people and a 1/2 tank of gas. I cruise at 38 to 40 mph. It burns around 9 gallons per hour at that operation. My boat is completely rigged out. These boats scoot. Best riding boat I have ever owned. Only comparable ride is a Blackjack. But, these Haynies stay on top of the chop. Chris will treat you right. The only reason I woud suggest a 225 Pro XS wuld be that you will pay significantly more for the 250 XS for maybe 2 to 3 mph more. Either motor you get will be fine. Good luck. What color?

BD

I am not sure about the color yet, I just put down a deposit a few minutes ago and I have until next week to pick everything. He offered me a very good deal on a Verado 300 if I wanted to go that route.

If Ryan(Montauk) says stay away from the verado listen to him... he works in a outboard repair shop

Sea-Trac Offshore 01-14-2011 07:17 AM

You will be in the shop more than on the water with the Verado...

After doing some research and hearing from you guys I am going to call chris and move to the yam 300f.

Sea-Trac Offshore 01-14-2011 08:43 AM

Very smart move. Just ask WL&F how much they just love their Verados! hahahaha

Exactly!! We do alot of work on the DWLF boats. They HATE them, but mercury pushes them and they dont have much of a choice. I cannot tell you how many lower units we have changed on verados as well as powerheads.

Ill never argue that Yammy is the best motor around...but the opti preforms much better and is a good fit for a Haynie....

Lets put em up side by side and you will see how a yamaha performs with a slight "tune" :work: 22 foot skeeter bay with a 280 3.1 yamaha will eat your haynie for lunch.
