Offshore people???

Do we have any avid blue water anglers here????

CatDaddy 05-06-2009 07:15 PM

I work offshore and fish off of platforms as much as i can. anywhere from garden banks, vioska knoll, mississippi canyon, eugene island, green canyon. I just drop a line off the side and i usually have good luck with red snapper, trigger fish, amberjacks, tuna, and a very occaisional yellowfin dolphin.

ScubaRu 05-06-2009 07:19 PM

I fish and dive offshore quite a bit, mostly outta Freeport. I wanna make some Sabine trips this year for Snapper.

LaAngler 05-06-2009 07:29 PM

i used to fish out of grand chenier and cameron, la a lot for snapper, ling, etc. a lot, gas prices and lower limits kinda ruined it for us.

just curious, why travel to sabine for snapper?

ScubaRu 05-06-2009 07:34 PM

LOTS of rigs, not a lot of people hitting them. Greater Houston area population mostly hits Galveston and Freeport. The water is dirtier, there are a lot more stingrays, but there are some big fish out there.

LaAngler 05-06-2009 09:05 PM

if you want some really untouched stuff try some of the rigs out of freshwater bayou/pecan island.....

we used to run southeast a lot out of grand chenier and at about 65 miles just about every platform held big schools of ling.

I wouldn't call myself avid but, I started going offshore when I was 12 years old and have logged over 500 trips in the 29 years that I've been doing it. It's really my 1st passion........I bought this bay boat because I have too many friends that have offshore boats, so I got rid of mine to fish in skinny water when the weather doesn't permit going offshore.

MallardFish 05-06-2009 09:44 PM

Not me

I've never been offshore fishing, but would love to experience it....hint hint!!!! :D

fishinpox 05-06-2009 10:03 PM

i went tuna fishing in febuary for the fist time. we went to green canyon. i was awsome. i thought catching trout on top water was sweet untill i caught a 100# tuna on a live hardtail fished under a kite it was like someone flushed 50 toliets at once when that tuna hit the hardtail on top!

Ship Shoal

I have always did the best with Red Snapper in Ship Shoal.. The trick was to get your bait to the bottom before the trigger fish and terd hustlers robbed you.. we had to use some 2 and 3 pound weights..

I fish offshore out of Sabine Pass. Don't waste your time ScubaRu. The water is WAAAAY too shallow and muddy. We don't have any Red Snapper over here. Nothing but hard heads and redfish out to 60 miles. Oh, and my buddy even caught a flounder 70 miles from the Sabine Pass jetties summer before last. It was a little over 5 lbs.

Then why you keep asking me to go fishing with you out of Sabine????

Yo, Fishinpox.. That pic of you holding the YFT with all the others busting in the background is Off The Hook!!

LittleRob 05-07-2009 08:14 AM

It's almost cheaper to go with a guide by the time you go gas up, we went a few times out of grand isle by the time we gas up on fuel and beer the fish cost os like $25 a piece oh and them we had a blowout on the trailer on the way home and roadside service is expencive aslo.

I drag my boat to Grand Isle at least twice a year. It is more than 300 miles from my house, but the blue water is close. It is cheaper than hiring a guide though.

ScubaRu 05-07-2009 11:51 AM

I think everywhere is pretty much loaded down with ARS right now, they are worse than trigger fish.

Snap Draggin 05-07-2009 01:06 PM

I was just kidding about Sabine Pass. We have some good fish here, but the water is shallow for a LONG way out. To put things into perspective, the place where my buddy caught the flounder 70 miles out was in 98' of water.

I'm looking at going to Grand Chenier and launch; however I need more information about the place before I drag my big tub over there. I think I might even have the range for Auger from there.

LaAngler 05-07-2009 01:36 PM

if you go to grand chenier lemme know i'll send you some info, it's about a 7 mile run from grand chenier park to the jettys, pretty safe except for a couple mud flats in the channel (run it the first time in the daylight and watch for the stakes), then another 30 miles to south oil city, another 10 miles to calcasieu rocks and steep rock (snapper/grouper holes), you then run into AJs and a lot more ling, and a lot better water at 50-60 miles in 272, 280 east cam blocks. you start seeing flying fish around that area usually.

They have some good rigs in vermillion blocks if you head southeast towards candy mountain, the little satellite platforms are the best for ling, even a big sunken jack up rig out there where we caught a sailfish on a whole pogie. you can see it laying on the bottom when the water is blue.

Cutty713 05-07-2009 01:44 PM

I used to be. Cost, lowering of limits, and not being able to put together a good crew at a moments notice for a window in the weather sent me back to the marsh. It sure was fun while it lasted thought.

meaux fishing 05-07-2009 02:37 PM

Would like to be one

i've gone once and im going this summer on a guided trip out of GI. If anybody has the equipment and an open spot i would pay part of the costs for a trip on their boat.

yak'em-n-stack'em 05-07-2009 03:02 PM

Capt. Richard Daughdrill-Cherece IV

Snap Draggin 05-08-2009 06:20 AM

I was going to say that I know a good one there.

LittleRob 05-08-2009 11:20 AM

Good luck in what ever you decide to do, but be careful open water is unforgiving
