mini kota riptide help

i have a minkota riptide trolling motor and today it died. i was trolling in the marsh and hit a couple of mud spots not too bad. well i started drifting with the current. next time i fired up the trolling motor it was making a wierd sound. I know this sounds funny but it sounded like a race car. it would take a while to get to full speed and sounded like it had pipes on it. well i was hot and got tired so we shut it down and came home. when i got home it won't do nothing now. checked all the wiring to batteries and connections. any one have any ideas?? its only about 2 1/2 years old.

had the same problem with mine, where the prop is, there is a nut there, go to wal-mart and buy a trolling motor accessory kit, its got the nut wrench, an extra nut and a few shear pins. You sheared a pin in your motor, when you take that nut off, you'll see what im talking about. Take the prop off and the pin will be in 3-5 pieces. Get the replacement package either at wally-world or academy and problem solved. Along with a 6-pack and its as good as new.

no it ain't that that was my first thought. (it has happened before.) The motor won't even turn on you can't hear it running or anything. has to be something electrical or something. Do these things have a warranty?

BIGJ 07-11-2009 02:04 PM

Did you check the reset switch on the little box connected to the positive post on the battery? Happened to me last week.

adamsfence 07-11-2009 02:08 PM

i don't have one!!! might be why it don't work anymore hun. probly burnt up

Jordan 07-11-2009 02:10 PM

you got a 12-24V switch ??? could be in the middle... mine does it when im too rough with it

adamsfence 07-11-2009 02:11 PM

no it is just straight 24v

Big Kahunaz 07-11-2009 02:18 PM

fuse blow after possibly overheating?

Jordan 07-11-2009 02:21 PM

Thats what i was thinking, did you take the top off and smell to see if it smells burnt ?

adamsfence 07-11-2009 02:21 PM

is there a fuse inside of the motor or head because don't have one on outside

Jordan 07-11-2009 02:23 PM

what thrust ?? Its possible. Phillips head screwdriver and 3 minutes take top off and see.

adamsfence 07-11-2009 02:24 PM

70. I'm going to take the head loose this evening when it cools off and check it out

Jordan 07-11-2009 02:28 PM

if ya need any help, u got my number

flounder_smacker 07-11-2009 04:33 PM

no fuse in the head. should of had a breaker inline. might have burnt the control unit up or maybe the motor. they do have a warranty which is 1 year.

eman 07-11-2009 05:01 PM

Hmmm

If it ran ,Then ran w/ a lot of noise . Then won't run at all.
It sounds like water got in the foot and the motor is kaput.
Take it in if its under warrenty and let the shop pull the foot down and check for water . Seen a bunch that hit bottom or stumps and cracked the sealant that is on the threads of the shaft where it screws into the foot.

adamsfence 07-11-2009 07:54 PM

i looked at the warranty on the website its says 3 year on the riptide it should be under warranty. i will call monday thank yall for your help

all star rod 07-11-2009 08:58 PM

Minn Kota has a 3 year warranty.

adamsfence 07-13-2009 04:04 PM

brought it to dhp marine in lake charles. he said by what i said happened it sounds like the brushes (i think thats it) over heated and melted. they haven't called me yet so i don't know if that was it. and it was under warranty. thanks for the help guys.

Trent Buxton 07-13-2009 04:14 PM

so they don't do good work? everyone told me they was good that i talked to. anyway they were the only ones that could work on minn kota

adamsfence 07-20-2009 12:04 PM

finished it today. they said the the controll box went out and the brushes was burnt in the motor. that is the second control box in about 6 months. hope this fixes everything. find out tomorow

Hackberry Hustler 07-20-2009 12:30 PM

DHP is the best in this area they do good work. I always order all the parts for mine from them and work on it myself. Glad you got it fixed.

Deadly D 07-20-2009 01:57 PM

Hey Fence make sure you put a inline breaker in there. I know they are a pain in the butt it could save you $$$ in the long run

Ray 07-20-2009 01:58 PM

Crap. I just got a new Riptide. Hope I get a few years out of it. I don't use it much, hopefully it will last.

ray i think i'm just snakebite because everyone else i talk to has great luck out of there's. think i just got a lemon. should be almost new now so maybe i'm starting over

adamsfence 08-06-2009 10:57 AM

piece of junk broke again

Jordan 08-06-2009 11:20 AM

lol... you got a lemon... i'd call minn kota and give them a piece of my mind !!!

adamsfence 08-06-2009 11:55 AM

Brought it back to dhp guy turned the knob and it worked. he said i guess it fixed it's self. I said i guess not. so we started taking it apart. the boy was very helpful once he figured i wasn't just going to leave.

anyway found out that it is a plastic piece on the 70lbs (which i have) that holds the brushes in place. any higher than that in trust it is copper that holds them. if you use your trolling motor on high as i do on big lake fairly often it melts the plastic and makes the brushes stick. when it cools down they weren't sticking. anyway fixed it and gave me a spair. he said they are suppose to be issuing a fix on it.......So this being said don't buy a 70lbs riptide.. go to the 80 or 101.....if you do have one don't lug it in mud or use it on high very long. the marsh is what got mine got stuck in the mud
