Any kind of info on the Pigfish? I looked but it's not really talked about. I never saw one inland or offshore before. Are they supposed to be reef fish?

I am pretty sure it is a grey snapper. How big was it? Where did you catch it?

ReelSlick 08-05-2010 01:46 PM

It was ~16 inches. Caught in Grand Chenier

Duck Butter 08-05-2010 01:47 PM

100 % Pigfish;)

Surely you guys do not really think this is a mangrove snapper:shaking:

ShadMan 08-05-2010 02:29 PM

I thought the body and markings looked like some sort of snapper, but the tail doesn't. I'd like to see the rest of the head.

look at the pic of the pigfish someone posted it looks just like that

cricket 08-05-2010 02:51 PM

its a guppy

Garfish 08-05-2010 02:57 PM

Pigfish, Piggy perch.
Catch a lot of them in the Galveston/ Freeport area. Bait stealers but different from pinfish. Good bait for big trout. Saw a guy last summer in Galveston on the rocks off the Seawall catch 3 trout over 20 inches using them. I was catching nothing but dinks on live shrimp fishing the same area.

Then it is definately a Mangrove Snapper!

ShadMan 08-05-2010 03:02 PM

Pigfish don't get larger than 12" typically. They are described as a "palm-sized" fish. I'd say it's definitely some type of snapper, maybe gray or mutton. I've never caught either, so I'm not sure which that is.

Gray (aka Mangrove) Snapper:

Definately not Mutton.....They have a black spot on each side like a redfish.

Duck Butter 08-05-2010 03:20 PM

Its JUST a PIGFISH! If it was 16" then it was a record sized fish! I am sure this is not the biggest pigfish ever caught, just that no one submits a record pigfish when they catch it@!

HAHA, well Jordon , clame your prize:*****:

Ray 08-05-2010 06:15 PM

Looks like some kind of Snapper, but it would be better to see the whole head.
It doesn't look like a Mangrove Snapper.

supercajun 08-05-2010 08:18 PM

record for lady fish in la is 4.6 pounds. that thing must of fought like a marlin. the lil half pound ones put up a good fight

speck-chaser 08-05-2010 09:06 PM

I caught 2 like that today, didnt know what it was either, but it looked just like that pigfish. Both were about the size of a good sized bream. The head is a little more slanted than the snapper, and its lips were fatter like the rolled lip of a ballon.

Ladyfish is a poor man's Tarpon.

Garfish 08-06-2010 08:11 PM

Caught about a 30 inch ladyfish in the surf today. Just like a small tarpoon.
Great Fight!! Better crab bait!!

Pole_benda 08-07-2010 01:30 PM

100% Pigfish. In Florida it is the best trout bait you could find. But a 16" pigfish isnt too uncommon out in the natural bottom in 50-60ft of water off the panhandle of Florida.

cajunhntr03 08-07-2010 02:26 PM

Mangrove Snapper

If we are voting, I vote for the piggy perch, definitely a big one, but a piggy all the same.

I seriously cannot believe ya'll are saying this is even remotely a mangrove snapper. Ya'll must have never caught a mangrove.
