TV question

Still in the market for a tv and trying to decide between these 2. I really dont want to spend more than $550 and I dont have to have the best tv on the market. Just want a quality one withoug alot of blur or glair. Anyone have opinions on these 2. I have read the Samsung has a buzzing noise but a little better picture than the LG. The LG is around $500 and the Samsung about $540.

Samsung PN42C450 42" Class Plasma HDTV - 720p, 1366x768, 16:9, 600Hz Subfield Motion Blur Reduction, 3x HDMI

LG 42pj350 42” Class High Definition Plasma TV (41.6” diagonally)

LaAngler 07-20-2010 02:31 PM

can't go wrong with either one imo

i'm shopping for a home theater in a box right now, looking at onkyo and denon's entry level set ups.

Red Devil 07-20-2010 02:51 PM

I heard the plasmas get too hot, so I opted for the vizio 42" 1080p 120 hz. Beautiful picture.

My step dad gave me his Yamaha surround system yesterday. It is about 7 years old but it sounds good and was free. I just need a tv, cant take my 27 inch sony any longer. After hooking up the surround sound yesterday I turned it on stadium sound and watched the outback bowl replay on ESPNU and realized my tv just was not cutting it.

ShadMan 07-20-2010 02:56 PM

Go with a Vizio LCD! Cheaper and better than a plasma.

yak'em-n-stack'em 07-20-2010 02:57 PM

Watch at best buy for open box tvs. I got my 42 inch plasma panasonic regularly 2100 got it for 600

Also depends on the use

Plasmas do get hot. But not too hot

Plasma is best for sports and low light environments

Montauk17 07-20-2010 03:00 PM

Between those two I would go with the samsung, love mine.

You have the 720p plasma? Any negatives? Have you noticed the huming noise I read about?

LaAngler 07-20-2010 03:02 PM

if you really feel like getting confused, head over to the avs forum

Actually, to state this properly, plasmas are ONLY good in low light environments, as the picture is not as bright as an LCD. LCDs are good for both low light and bright light environments. If you have windows in your room and don't always keep the curtains pulled closed, go LCD. ;)

RaginCagin 07-20-2010 03:10 PM

I am terrible with anything electrical, i about blew a gasket hooking up surround sound yesterday then firuring out how to get the tv, stereo, and dvd player to all play through it. Took me 2 hours but I got it.

Shadman the cheapest vizio lcd I have found in 42" was $700. Thats $200 more than both the plasmas I found. You know of a website with cheaper prices.

I have read that used to be the case but have read that they have made big strides and that is not the case anymore and burnouts on the screen are really not a problem anymore. Anyone know this to be true?

specktator 07-20-2010 03:18 PM

i got a 50" Vizio Plasma. Been having it for a few years. I have never had one problem with my Plasma. It has a great picture. I play ps3 on it all the time. Never have any problems. They say you are not supposed to play games on it. It has never gotten too hot. I paid $1300 for it a few years ago. I think u can get them now for like $1100.
I have a 32" Polaroid LCD in my room that I bought from Wal Mart like 6 years ago. Paid like $900 for it. Has never given me one problem.
Amazing how much the price has dropped over the years.
I would go Samsung. For $550 for a 42," thats gonna be hard to beat.

yak'em-n-stack'em 07-20-2010 03:18 PM

Shad. My plasma is not in a dark room and there is no glare

And as far as not lasting as long. That's not true anymore

yak'em-n-stack'em 07-20-2010 03:19 PM

My next tv is gonna be an led

LaAngler 07-20-2010 03:20 PM

i have a samsung plasma i like it, i looked at the vizio stuff and can't see where it looks any better.

best buy has the samsung 55 LED 120hz for around 1900 right now, really want...:D

jpeff31787 07-20-2010 03:20 PM

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Insignia...&skuId=9602959

this is the one i'd probably get. I have a 32" insignia and i love it. I wish i had the 360 degree swivel tho. This one also has 120Hz instead of 60Hz. i think this makes the picture better when there's lots of action going on. Kind of like a refresh rate i believe

yak'em-n-stack'em 07-20-2010 03:21 PM

Yes higher hertz is better

yeah those led's are BADDD. I'd love to get me one, but I need some furniture for my house. Tired of using a futon as a couch.

they had a HUGE stack in the back right corner, i should have grabbed one and took off towards the door! :p

yak'em-n-stack'em 07-20-2010 03:24 PM

I love my beat buy card. No interest for 3 years. Can't wait for the price on the 46 inch led open box to get down about 300 more bucks

Vizio is cheaper than Samsung, and made in the USA. It's known to be the best bang for your buck brand. ;)

720p is not high enough resolution for a 42" TV. With a 32" you would not be able to tell a significant difference, but you will notice with a 42".

You do realize that...the bigger the picture...the bigger the losses will seem?

I bought a 42" LG HD last week. The only reason I didn't get the Vizio is because they only had in in 52". The LG has a good pic, tho.

ShadMan 07-20-2010 03:38 PM

Here is one for around $600:

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/pr...navAction=push

Here's one for $598:

https://www.target.com/VIZIO-Class-1...sc_rev_it_1_pn

If you want to jump through a couple hoops, you can get the same one for $538. This is a heckuva deal:

I was told you would only notice a difference on blue ray is that true? They said HD channels in your house were only 720p so even with a higher def. tv you would only see 720p.

That vizio for $538 is a pretty good deal.

AMEN BROTHER GO CAJUNS

If you have a room that is quite bright you will have some reflections on a Plasma(they use a glass like surface for the screen cover, sorta like an old tube TV) while LCD do not reflect lights, bright windows etc.

LCDs on the other hand have issues with motion blur(fast moving objects have jagged edges) and cannot handle deep blacks (dark blacks) they will seem washed out or gray. Therefore for watching movies (dark blacks colors) and sports a Plasma is better.

Depends on what you want to watch and your room condition...the LCDs are getting better with motion blur depends on the viewier. I am very picky.

I have a Pioneer plasma in a semi bright room I notice reflection a little but I've had a lot of people compliment the quality of the picture...but you better get HD programming from your cable provider, it is the key!!!

I just got dish network last month and I made sure the installed HD receivers so I could just upgrade to hd channels once I got my tv so I should be good to go there.

That vizio for $538 is a pretty good deal.

Most HD broadcasts (Dish, DirecTV, cable) are upconverted to 1080i or 1080p, so it will look better on a 1080p TV. Also, if you have an upconverting DVD player, it will upconvert to 1080p. The difference in price between a 720p and a 1080p TV is negligible these days, so I would definitely go with the one that will be compatible with the most devices for the longest amount of time. 720p is on its way out.

My Vizio 55" is 240MHz and 50,000:1 contrast. Every bit as good as plasma at both, but more vibrant and bright. ;)

longsidelandry 07-20-2010 04:26 PM

Just remember one thing, when buying anything electronic, always get the most up to date that you can afford. If you get anything less, it will be out of date in a few years and you will need/want another one.

i got a sony 52 lcd love it been having it for bought year an a half no problems so far but i did buy the extended warrany...you never know i got a 32" vizio in bed room it crashed bout 8 months after i had it they came and change out the main power board or summin ..worked bout a week .. they just sent me a new one

flyphisher 07-20-2010 06:14 PM

I'm still kinda behind, we have a 53" RCA HD projection that we bought back in 2005, works good enough for us. The first surround sound system we got was only 400 watts. Don't waste your time on anything less that 800-1,000 watts if you have a decent sized room. Our living room/kitchen, foyer is about 18x26 feet or so. I can rattle the windows pretty good with a nice action flick or war movie!!

I have a Vizio 32" that I'm fixin' to take to the pasture for a little 'target practice'. It won't solve the problem, but will make me feel better. It's only 2 years old and will not power up. I went to Fixya.com and found you could unplug for a couple of minutes and it would reboot. Now that doesn't even work. Google Viziopowerproblems if y'all want to hear some pizzed off owners. I will never own another one...

Isn't that covered under warranty?

Zachary Boy 07-21-2010 09:43 AM

I don't remember, but I think I bought 1 year. I'm still trying to find the paperwork..With all the consumer products we buy,it has turned into a file cabinet Faux Pas...

O ok, I always buy the extended warranty on items that should last more than a few years (tv's, game consoles, etc). I had a HDMI port that went out on my tv when it was 3 years old and I was able to get it swapped for free, that was nice.

Hmmm....Vizio is the #1 selling brand on the market, and this is the first time I've heard a complaint about them. I have four Vizios and couldn't be happier. I won't ever buy any overseas junk again as long as they keep making 'em in America.

Do you have to bring to a 'factory certified' repair shop or can the corner T.V. repair shop fix?

fun w son 07-21-2010 10:14 AM

just say "no" to plasma they don't last, go lcd!!!

If you think that plasmas don't last. The fact of the matter is that you are wrong
