Deer Season

Who's ready? I know I am!!! Went to Cabela's last week and picked up a new bow case, got a couple new things to try out this year. I'm gonna try some of that "Throw & Grow" at my bow stand along with some "Deer Cane". I can't wait to pull the trigger on that first one this year, whether it's by bow or by gun.

Red Devil 07-19-2010 09:37 AM

I knew someone would come along and start this thread. God it's killing me. I've been burning up all my magazines and catalogs and it's driving me crazy.

wtretrievers 07-19-2010 09:39 AM

Going to the camp this coming w/e, gotta move a stand or 2, then go check a few persimmon trees;)

Montauk17 07-19-2010 10:04 AM

That's the only reason I got a bow. This will be my first time hunting with one so I started practicing last week. I need to get the drawback weight adjusted a little though, I had it dropped down so I could get used to it and practice good form but now I needa pick it back up so I can get used to the full weight. I can't wait to get my 1st shot at a deer!

When you let that 1st arrow fly & it connects & it sounds like you slapped it with a baseball bat you'll be hooked!!!!:bounce: If you don't bout blow a gasket somethings wrong with ya!!!!

Is it October YET? 07-19-2010 10:37 AM

I have to have back surgery so I will miss most of bow season. SUCKS!!! I need to go and hang some new ladders and cut the fields one of these days. Nothing better than sitting in a tree stand!!! They are in trouble once gun season rolls around.

That's what I keep hearing. I feel sorry for that 1st one that walks out on me!

For those on here that are more into deer hunting than fishing be sure to go check out bayoubucks.com. Ross will back me up. Best site in Louisiana when it comes to anything hunting. Best group of guys you will ever meet also.

I am a little more excited about Deer hunting this year.

I mostly hunt Sherburne, but go to Clear Creek some. I just have never gotten use to hunting "Piney" woods.....love the swamp hunting.

Since Gustav went through the Atchafalaya area, the hunting has been tuff there. Lots and lots of trees and tree tops on the ground make it hard to walk and once I find a tree to climb, there is not very good visability.

Got luck last season and spotted a doe that was "sneeking" past me and got a shot with my rifle. If she has taken 2 more steps, I probably would not have seen her or been able to take a shot.

Bowhunting last season......deer never came close enough in an open spot to take a shot.

Here is what happens when they come too close.........some of you have seen these pic. before. I just noticed....I put the wrong year in the picture, it was killed in 2008.

specktator 07-19-2010 12:16 PM

I cant wait either! i am going to Wyoming opening weekend of bow season for mule deer/antelope, but when I get back its on! I will be hangin a few feeders/cameras in the next few weeks.

We are doing a big group hunt at Clear Creek September 18 with about 30 guys so far. If you are interested sign up at bayoubucks and you can get all the info if you want to go. I've never been there but im going to give it a try.

I can't wait for the season to start either. I am going to the camp to put up a new box stand this weekend and to fill all the feeders and cut trails to get ready to plant food plots in the coming months.

I hunt in North West Louisiana in DeSoto Parish. Anyone else on here hunt in the area of the state? Always looking to talk to people that hunt the same area and type of land to bounce ideas off of and see what you are planting.

Here area few pictures from last year

Thanks for the heads-up. I guess you will be camping. If the Temperature is not up tooooooo Hotttttt, I might be there. I have hunted up there for ~ 13 years now so I know the place fairly well. The problem up there is ....when you find a good area....they cut the pines after a couple of years.

I have a "New" plan that I want to try up at CC. Just need to do some more scouting to check out a couple of places that I have found.

One spot that was fairly good last fall......I found this Spring, that they the clear cut all the trees surounding this area.

EvinFord 07-19-2010 01:30 PM

Longsidelandry,

Unfortunately no, we did not see any of these brutes from the stand...only on camera. Our land it part of the Haynesville Shale gas deposit and the deer spent more of the season in hiding because of all the survey people on our land every day. I can't tell you how many times I would come to the stands in the afternoon and find survey flags. We harvested only 6 deer last year and they were all does. We have 400 acres and there are only 4 of us that hunt it and nobody saw anything over a spike and does. Not a single mature or even young buck from a stand...rough season. And actually, the one large buck in my last picture is the nicest deer we have seen on our property in years and he was the only one to show himself during daylight even on camera...all the rest are night pictures.

Hopefully this year will be different as they are done surveying and on to drilling wells which means they are only on a very small portion on our property and leave the majority of it alone so the deer are not so nocturnal.

here is one my buddy shot a few 100 yards from my camp last season. His gf got him a climber for Xmas. They were cleaning a deer. he decided to go try out his new climber around lunch time. decided to bring his gun. the clothes he has on was what he was wearing (jeans and a navy sweater lol) climbs up sits down and 5 minutes later this guy walks out. talk about lucky.

when i get home i will post some pics of some deer i got on camera. some monsters, have never seen any of them though.

longsidelandry 07-19-2010 01:48 PM

lol Wait til you get your first one, there's nothing like bagging a deer. One of my good buddies has been a life-long duck hunter and came deer hunting with me for the first time last season. I put him on a doe just so he could get one under his belt and after he shot I called him, he could barely talk his adrenaline was so high! Now he wants to come with me every weekend lol.

Red Devil 07-19-2010 01:58 PM

I have to build one more box blind this weekend then it's up to the camp and mow my lanes and put out the new stand and put up my ladder stand for bow season. According to whunter, we have sign everywhere, so this should be a good year.

EvinFord 07-19-2010 01:59 PM

Yeah, nothing like the first one. I have been trying to get some of my friends in to deer hunting that are diehard fisherman and make fun of how much I deer hunt. Well this past year I was able to put two of them on their first deer and both of them bagged a doe. They are both hooked and are actually coming to help me at the camp this weekend put up some new stands and put their time in so they can come with me again this year.

i know. i havent been using my cameras much lately b/c no matter where i put them i get pics like this. most of these pictures are just a few 100 yards from my camp. then alot of them come out in the daylight. but i have never seen any of these. that buck in the first pic would probably score close to 170! those cameras will drive u nuts!:spineyes::spineyes:

Hopeful

I love to bowhunt. See deer about 50% of the time I climb with my bow. Don't kill every year, but probably could if I put the bow down and grab a rifle. Been shooting a cross bow for the last 5 years due to neck injuries. Hunt only WMA/NWR. Usually hunt Clear Creek, Bayou Cocdrie, Tensas and Buckhorn.

Having back problems this year so not sure how much hunting I will do.

those of you just starting to bow hunt is DON'T DO IT. IT BECOMES A DISEASE AND YOU CAN'T STOP DOING IT.

Montauk17 07-19-2010 09:55 PM

Thats some nice looking deer Seth!

whunter29 07-20-2010 08:52 AM

Hey red devil I am waiting on you to go to the camp. I am going back up there in a couple of weekends to clear shooting lanes. I will cut your shooting lanes for you. I just have to have the bushhog on my tractor. I had the disk when I went up last trip and I planted some late soybeans to see what would eat them. As you all can tell I am pumped.

That'll work since I laid my tractor over in a ditch and it's out of commision. Cheaper than spraying too. Bring plenty of cold ones. LMAO

Montauk17 07-20-2010 09:21 AM

Heading to da camp in north la to do some bushhoggin and trim shooting lanes this weekend. Plan on bringing my rifle, hopefully can shoot a hog or two.

Maybe so. lol Man i have not even come close to seeing any of these deer. The guy that owns the property next to mine told me last year that he quit hanging his cameras b/c the monster bucks he sees on them drive him nuts. On this piece of property, we usually get 1 nice buck a year, nothing like the ones pictured though. I am a big duck hunter. I deer hunted almost every weekend when i was a kid and just kinda got sick of it I guess. But I bow hunt very hard during October, b/c I can't duck hunt. Bow season, IMO, is the best time to get a shot on that big boy. No one has been in the woods in months, besides me 2 or 3 times filling feeders, hangin bow stands, and checking cameras. The deer have no clue you are there. On this place, once rifle season opens, the deer scatter. I have seen very nice bucks the last few years opening weekend of bow season. I am gonna hang some cameras pretty soon and I will post some pics to get yall a little more fired up!

I here ya on getting the big ones. Me and a buddy on my lease had 4 deer last year that would go between 125" and 140" on camera almost every night. It caused me to hunt the same spot way to much imo. One of the big bucks we had on camera was killed it was the bottom right pic. I posted on here it was a 129" 8 point weight 242 lbs.. Before I started putting out cameras 2 years ago I moved around alot and killed alot better deer and that is what i will be doing again this year.

Exactly. I would find a new area, say to myself this is where I am gonna bow hunt, hang a camera. But i have a few cameras! LOL So i will just throw the other ones up in different areas just to see what happens. And the biggest deer always show up on the spot I want to hunt the least. But I would move there anyway. Then I will be sitting in that stand not seeing anything saying to myself, i should have just stayed put! Those cameras are the devil! That's y I dont use them much anymore.
