Academy has an Ugly Stick Jr, its sort of between the spider man type pole and a full size pole. About 4' long and a push button Zebco type rod-n-reel combo. My 6 yr old can wield a full size rod but prefers using the shorter one. I spooled it up with 10lb mono and it has held up well so far.

I used Zebco 33's for a long time in my youth and they handled most everything I caugh from brim to reds.
I bought a 3 Zebco 33 combo setups for my 5 and 7 yr old nephews and the pink lady's version for my 6 yr old daughter for Xmas gifts this year. They can all cast those push button reels purty good. They were reeling in the rat reds, puppy drum, trout, channel mullet/whiting, and croakers like crazy in the surf during the summer and wore out the Zebco 2o2's. The salt and sand kinda helped out too. The 33 setups look more sturdy and the 5 1/2 foot rods are plenty to handle the pond brim and catfish or the surf fishing they'll be doing.
