I caught 2 like that today, didnt know what it was either, but it looked just like that pigfish. Both were about the size of a good sized bream. The head is a little more slanted than the snapper, and its lips were fatter like the rolled lip of a ballon.

Caught about a 30 inch ladyfish in the surf today. Just like a small tarpoon.
Great Fight!! Better crab bait!!

100% Pigfish. In Florida it is the best trout bait you could find. But a 16" pigfish isnt too uncommon out in the natural bottom in 50-60ft of water off the panhandle of Florida.

If we are voting, I vote for the piggy perch, definitely a big one, but a piggy all the same.

I seriously cannot believe ya'll are saying this is even remotely a mangrove snapper. Ya'll must have never caught a mangrove.

Pigfish (Orthopristis chrysoptera) are in the grunt family and are another good bait for most bottom fish. Tarpon are also particularly fond of them. I have read that they are a fair-flavored panfish, but I think it’s time to tell you that I am not in the habit of eating my bait - and pigfish are bait on my boat

Definately a pigfish. Use to catch them all the time in Florida. Great trout bait.

keeawe 08-18-2010 09:57 PM
