Coleman extreme 7 day is comparable to the yeti on holding ice time wise......Hinges, latches, etc, different story.

I xant see buying a cooler for $500 that is too heavy to lift once you put a days xatch in......

"W" 05-20-2013 06:16 PM

All I can say is....this Thread has some ice chest whores!!

Why does one need to set records of how many days you can hold ice??? Just drain and add ice of melts!!!

Is a 500 dollars ice chest going to make you that much happier because u held ice 48 hrs instead of 38???

Ice is cheap

PUREBAY2200 05-20-2013 06:28 PM

Had my yeti since summer 2008.
Never replaced a thing, still looks great & stays cold.
It's been used & abused.
Fell out boat & rolled down interstate , stayed sealed!!

Jadams 05-20-2013 06:36 PM

Yetis r too damn heavy fill up a chest w fish and u can barely pick it up

bjhooper82 05-20-2013 06:38 PM

Does anybody have any experience with pelican coolers? They seem pretty nice also.

That shouldn't be an issue for a big ole boy like you.

With that many fish any ice chest would be heavy, but I know what you mean. We had 7 dozen crabs in my 110qt yeti a few weeks ago and that thing was heavy!!

No, but I've been wanting to look at them.

"W" 05-20-2013 07:01 PM

I have a Pelican Ice chest(120qt) that was giving to me at a oilfield event

Weights a ton!!! I use it for storage in my barn!

Bdub 05-20-2013 08:21 PM

All of the "good" coolers are heavy as hell. I got a 16 ft boat with a 25, any extra weight is noticed. Buy a 50-70$ cooler every couple of years. You got a 300$ cooler that you gotta use twice as much ice (pre chill) and then cant even pull it out the boat loaded. Buy an extra 1$ or 2 worth of ice and never look back..Just like fancy baits catch the fisherman not the fish.

Ice is cheap

The whole point of this thread was to see if I was missing something... which I was. The seal on the chest is broken. Trial and error suggested from someone on this site helped me. That is why I asked the members (to get feedback). I would never buy one for that price. I just assume use a igloo or Styrofoam chest.

specktator 05-20-2013 08:23 PM

Yeti's are rediculously heavy. I just use mine for hunting. I use the fish box in my boat and a 20-30 qt igloo for drinks.

marsh life 05-20-2013 08:39 PM

Igloo with the thick lid is just as good and a quarter of the price. Who has time to purchase special ice and or chill drinks and cooler. Ice chest Dont catch fish. Spend the extra money towards a new pistol.

^^^^^^^^

YEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Top Dawg 05-20-2013 09:42 PM

I got my 50qt yeti for $50 couldn't pass it up. I agree ice is cheap but the quality of the build is what I like. Don't have to worry bout hinges breaking warping. When u open it and shut it it creates a vacuum and you have to let the pressure out of the drain hole to get the lid open. Last year I had a get together at my house. Filled it up with the machine Ice you get from roadside machines. Used it for drinking ice throughout the day. Had about 3/4 of chest of Ice left. This was on a Sunday and I used the remaining ice the next Saturday to go fishing. This was in June outside under my carport.

Feesherman 05-21-2013 05:53 AM

I got a buddy dat says he will sell his yeti to the next person that asks him about it. He tired of packin that heavy beast around

swamp snorkler 05-21-2013 06:19 AM

I make my own hinges. Take a piece of 2" wide vinyl strap like the truckers use to tie down loads. Cut it about 3" long with an old heated up butter knife so that the ends don't come unraveled, screw it in place of the plastic hinges. Been doing that for 3 or 4 years and my hinges are still holding up.

Dink 05-21-2013 06:33 AM

I use garden hose. Same concept

Self sticking envelopes? Amazing

SaltERedneck 05-21-2013 07:30 AM

Real Question

Should water leak out of the chest (when turned on its side) around the gasket when the chest is completely sealed?

I would think that gasket is supposed to prevent that... seems like it isnt air tight at all.

Top Dawg 05-21-2013 07:31 AM

I got 60 and 3 keystone tall boys.

(a bucket and a bag hold the same amount) with that alot of stores have there ice frezzers turned way up warm, so by the time it hit the cooler it was already about gone even tho the bag was still full.

Just my exp.

The Ice does make a huge difference. I keep my roadie yeti in my work truck all the time with ice so it stays Pre cooled. If I get Ice from the gas station around the corner on Monday it's gone by wed. Sometimes thurs. depending on ambient temp. If I get it from shop it last till Saturday. Sometimes through the weekend.

Serious question here:

How in the world can ice be different temperatures? Slow melt ice?:rotfl:

I can see where shape of the ice (block vs cubes) could make a little difference, but ice is just frozen water. Once that water reaches 32 degrees it turns to ice. That ice whether it stays in the freezer at 31 degrees or -100 degrees is still ice and no chemical change takes place after 32 degrees because the water molecules have already frozen:help: You take the same ice out of a 31 degree freezer and a -100 degree freezer and place it out in the sun, they are both going to melt at the same rate. If there was salt or something mixed in with the ice, the ice would be colder because it would take a lower temp to freeze, but it also would start melting at a higher temp so would be counterproductive.

Ice makes a huge difference...believe it or not....the process of making ice is the key!!!
You can take Ice made by a few diffrent machines and you will find that some hold better than others...My Ice Machine does not make solid ice like my buddies and his Ice holds longer than mine all the time

I notice the difference in say gas station ice and the roadside machine ice. The ice at gas station is cubed with a big air hole in the middle. Not a solid piece of ice. The roadside machines seem to be more dense.

PaulMyers 05-21-2013 10:27 AM

I think a lot of the difference with ice is how it is stored before you buy it. If the ice is coming from a dispenser, that ice is typically stored in a bin that has no refrigeration. The ice itself is the only thing keeping it cold. The ice storage boxes you find at convenience stores are typically freezers that control the temp.

Duck Butter 05-21-2013 10:41 AM

So, the ice is already in the melting phase when you buy it, gotcha:)

weedeater 05-21-2013 10:41 AM

if you take a bag of ice from the big ice machines on side of the road and put it in a deep freezer it will freeze it solid and it will last alot longer, that ice always tends to be wet and melting when you first buy it.

You sir, are correct!

Funny (to me) story, my mother has an ice machine for their office and she gets ice every Friday and if she comes down here she brings a chest full of it every time. If there is a family get together she always brings the ice from her work. She calls it 'the good ice':rotfl: That is her contribution to every function is the good ice. We make fun of it but anyways Cool story bro:help:

SaltERedneck 05-21-2013 11:25 AM

DuckB... my mother in law does the same thing. She calls it "good ice" too. Kinda like the ice you get at sonic.

swamp snorkler 05-21-2013 11:29 AM

The Ice at Canes is the best.

Slo-Melt Ice is just bigger chunks, You put that in a cup and you aint going to have any room for Pop, plus when the cube slides down it sometimes bust ya lip open.

3FLa 05-21-2013 11:32 AM

Same Motherinlaw

DuckB/SalteRedneck.....Sounds weird. Maybe you both got same motherinlaw.

Today, I tried to lift a Yukon Extreme about 54 qts. That ***** was so heavy while empty I would never be able to lifted it with anything in it.

I may regret saying this, but I am starting to side with "W" on this issue!

Its just regular ice to me, now Sonic Ice IS good ice:grinpimp:

meaux fishing 05-21-2013 12:01 PM

Slo Melt ice is a brand in SE Louisiana. It is in big chunks rather than small cubes so it really does melt slower

"W" 05-21-2013 01:25 PM

Ice that freezes cloudy will not last as long as ice that freezes clear...that is a FACT
You want your ice to freeze from inside out...not outside in..(Cloudy ice)

Jadams 05-21-2013 01:41 PM

W's area of expertise..... Stock guru, fish legend, boat freeboard engineer, trucking logistics manager, Internet hero, and know chemical ice engineer! What if I freeze demineralized water for my ice cubes W r how bout dasani bottled water frozen could u give me the times for the phase change per each type of water?

fishwater 05-21-2013 01:44 PM

My 65 k2 sits under my lean post for 4 and 5 days with ice in it even when i put the boat back in my warehouse which gets super hot, i have had yetti and prefer my K2 anyday of the week.
