I've called my friend who prepares the fields to give me the name and ratio of the herbicide he uses for the sunflowers. Dual 21oz to an acre Spartan 4 oz to an acre. 8lbs of prodovic sunflower seed per acre (broadcasted). Brown top millet broadcasted 20lbs/acre. Fertilizer 25-15-15 200lbs/acre hope this helps.... |

I'll post some pics of my progress....I'm pumped. We got lots of birds in the area already and I can kill a few just pass shooting, I'm hoping by planting I can invite people for some shoots and kill enough to make all this worth it.

Texasweed
You can't buy "Birdeye" seed. Birdeye is actually Texasweed or Mexicanweed. It grows naturally here in Southwest Louisiana when conditions are right. Birdeye is what doves would rather eat while they are in this area but they will eat other small grain if the conditions are right. I shot a good number of birds last year in a milo field but it was bush hogged down to the ground and easy for them to access.

I have access to about 1000 acres in Iota. Would anyone be interested in forming a Dove Club there and share in the work/cost to plant it up? Let me know and I'll see if my friend wants to go this route. It just sits there idle. There are some tree lines and a big pond in the back that borders the bayou.

I would be interested. Anyone else???

By chance do you have any birds hanging around your field right now????? |

Doves stay pretty thick year round out here, I see quite a few when I'm outside. I've noticed the last couple weeks that the bobwhite quail are thick out here too. I had to stop my truck in the road the other day to let a few cross. |
Oh man that's awesome that you have some bobwhite. I love those little guys. Wish we had more around, cause I would love to hunt them, but the population just isn't there, or on any of the public land I hunt. lol. And reefman is right on with what he said. Dove will jump in that thick stuff in a heart beat. They love croton (pretty sure that's what that is). OOooooh, can't wait for the season, already gettin the itch (must.....not.....shoot.....birds on bird feeder....haha).

x2!!! Somebodies got to kill his limit for him! Lol!!!!! |
Quote:
Yeah, very limited, think it opens up around the same time as woodcock. Just isn't as much habitat for them anymore. Very particular birds, being that they are ground dwellers, they have to have ground coverage but also room to run underneath that cover. That croton might provide them with the coverage they need. If you managed that in a particular way, if you were interested in quail, I bet you could have a bunch of birds. And after I looked back at the pic I knew it was Wooly Croton. |
