Anyone with money to burn can go out and buy a shiny new bay boat and a gps spot map and go chase the trout that CCA has been so successful in bringing back. The problem is not that they aren't as good of fisherman as some of the others on the lake, but that they were never taught proper etiquette. Sure there are a few people out there that don't care about being courteous, but mostly it is ignorance. Cussing them and calling them pilgrim while you storm off will not make matters better. If someone rolls up on your spot and ruins it; the fish are gone. Might as well turn around and make the best of the situation and let them know what they did and how to remedy it next time. The more new fishermen we educate the better everyone's lake experience will be.

Its almost like duck hunting with someone 450 yards away and .... I digress!:)

If a pilgrim messes me up... He will know...that is the only way to teach them to understand..... Best advice is don't fish next to anyone If you
#1...have no clue what your fishing
#2..... Don't have understanding of trout fishing
#3....if you look for boats to find fish....you need to give up fishing because your a lost cause

1fastmerc 01-06-2012 10:35 PM

It sounds like according to some people on here that you can't fish Big Lake unless you have taken a course on how to properly spec fish. Whatever happened to newbies learning how to fish. Not everybody had someone to teach them how to fish or even how to operate a boat. My dad taught me fish and how to be respectful on the water. If take your child and try to teach them by yelling and screaming at them. They will not learn. They will tune you out and or get mad. If you take the time to teach them wether you know them or not they will be a much better boater and fisherman. I do know some people are just jerks and don't care. Some of this "potlickers" maybe watching you to learn the technics that are producing you fish. This is just my $.02.

When I fished wit him, no one else was brave enough to go out in that weather. We had the whole lake to ourselves. So I didn't get to see the fun stuff.

Lol. You starting to get bossy like weewacker. I'm definitely no threat. Wish I was but definitely not a threat. Maybe one day I'll get chance to try those spots out again in my own boat.

Grand Isle on weekends is the worst place I ever seen... Unless weather is bad.
You can be drifting a reef and someone will pass 20 yards from you, waving at us, thinking they are being friendly.

ScubaLatt 01-08-2012 12:29 AM

I dont think that the people following you were of this site. those people don't care to educate themselves on sites like this one.

As far as Lake Decade
I dont fish Decade in December/January because of the crowds.
I can catch just as good in Dularge/Mechant once you learn the area
I dont mind seeing a few people on the water but Decade is just crazy and I dont go fishing to fight crowds.

If you dont want pilgrims then stay off the popular spots is all I can say.

If they follow you out of the launch (which I have had happen) stop somewhere random dont bring them to one of your good spots they will fish it clean when you are not there and some even destroy the habitat by running over reefs and dragging there motar over points without even knowing what they are doing.

I've fished decade 3 times in December, it was only bad once. I found more fish by staying away from the boats. I never really saw too many catching that were grouped up. Boats breed boats out there.

There has been potlickers around forever, there is just more of them now days. Part of the problem is the elite status given to specks and reds. In the past, weekend warriors and beginners would get some dead shrimp or something and be happy just to go and catch some sheephead, drum, or croaker and they would begin their education on fishing and boating - may graduate to the 'elite' species, may not. Today, everybody skips K-12 education and goes straight to college. We, as people have also become so competitive, that we feel a successful day on the water has to equate to catching and people are willing to do what ever it takes to be succesful. We see it in the real world too. It has been a real struggle for myself. I used to fish a lot and catch a lot, then I 'retired' for about 8-10 years -just kind of pulled a Barry Sanders. Recently, I have decided I need to start getting back in to it and it is a struggle. Coming from the expectation of catching a limit and feeling like you are the one people are calling for a report or 'following' to the one who is looking for a report. I don't get to pick my days to go now days, my days pick me if you know what I mean. Because it is all about perspective, I'll share my New Years resolution because I think many of us need to remember why we get out on the water:

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after. ~Henry David Thoreau

Saturday was a victory for me, because I figured the lake would be packed with the weather and the NFL playoffs so I went way north and enjoyed a spot I use to fish 20-25 years ago. I was by myself all morning. Only caught 5, but they were nice and I enjoyed every minute of the peace and just being on the water.

Ray 01-08-2012 01:46 PM

If you fish in Turners, you are not being potlicked. That place is always full of boats.
Everyone fishes there, it's first come, first fish. Just need to attempt to stay far
enuff away from other boats that your lure cannot come close to another fishermans
lure. If our lines can get tangled, someone is too close.
If you are in Turners first, or any other reef that is producing at that time of year,
then consider yourself potlicked.
To me, potlicking is when you are fishing and catching, and someone slows down,
watches you pull in a fish, then comes in and sets up on your area.
I seen that every time I fished Prien Lake area. Boats hauling azz along the channel,
see you fighting a fish, slow down and wait to see what it is. As soon as you pull in
a fish, they ease in on you.

We didn't do that well. We had a late start due to my wife needing to sleep late but it wass nice to have her in the boat with me. I'm probably going tonight and hopefully I should be able to avoid the crowds!

When I was a kid fishing with my grandpaw, we fished for bass, bream, redfish, and flounder. Specs were slimy, wormy !?*%#. Not worth keeping. Times change

I Disagree....because I know of several reefs that no one ever will fish on or even knows about.....I can sit and watch people for hours and no one will even go close....I will ease over to it...and start catching trout...then 5-9 boats start coming get on my drift line right behind me...SO YES TURNERS IS FULL OF POTLICKING PILGRIMS........... This post started with POTLICKING.....

They see a boat that is catching a fish or know who is in the boat...and they come ..

Like the other day...I was on a drift not by anyone....And was about to go back to when i started when 3 boats came in right behind me......I know for a fact they had no idea what they was doing because they ran with the big motor right on the sweet spot of that reef where I just boated 34 trout

Turners is loaded with sweet spots and I have about 13 I can go to any day and pull trout off of...

They eat good, but they are hard to clean.
Trout are good to eat, fun to catch, but very easy to clean.
And there are millions of them.

finger-mullet94 01-11-2012 10:25 PM

lake decade

lake decade is the worst place ive had boats do that to me before, even had some watch me catch trout ,troll motor ahead of me and and drop anchor directly ahead of me.

1fastmerc 01-11-2012 10:30 PM

Toledo is bad to. They may not see you catch a fish but if you are in there spot they will cut you off. They also don't think twice running 70mph 20yrds from ya either.

That's one of the times when a super spook comes in handy. Sling it across their bow and they tend to back off, at least out of casting distance!
