you sure its a 40? as far as I know all the 40's are 3 cylinders

We'll it didn't say 2 cyc but I tried to do some quick research at work and came up with that. From what I found a 1995 Suzuki 40 was a 2cyclinder and weighed roughly 160 pounds. I could be completely wrong though. my work computer blocks almost everything so I'm limited to what I can click on.

Yes they make 40 2 cyl's.....also made 4 cyl's. The 3 cyl 25 suzuki was the better motor.

ok maybe if its an old 2 cycle it might be 2 cylinder

my 2002 df40 is a 4 stroke 3 cylinder and weights 240 something lbs.

It's a 90s 40 Suzuki. That's why I referenced the 1995 model. My 2013 TLDI 40 was 205lbs.

The 3cyl 25s were kinda like the Mega40 right?

not really sure but I do remember the sales pitch on it was the 3's were quieter, much more reliable, needed less maint, and were better on gas while the 2's were known for having more pep but needing maint repairs sooner and not lasting as many years before needing more serious repairs like pistons and rings to restore compression. its not a negative, its just a trade off for more power means things wear quicker.

the reason they had more wear was everything had to be bigger with just two cylinders so heavier pistons and rods caused more friction wear slinging that extra weight where the 3's were using parts much lighter and smaller because there were 3 cyclinders instead of two

That's probably why it's for sale with a burnt piston. :rotfl: sounds like I should steer clear. I'm still looking for a tiller 25hp Outboard!

I wouldn't avoid 2 cylinders just for that, its just a design difference and its a choice for speed and power over longer life (only talking about an extra year or two on average I bet) so the way I look at it I wouldn't let number of cylinders make up my mind.

as to that motor, its hard to say, if that's all that's wrong with it it could be a great deal but the key is "if that's all that's wrong with it"

I think overall you shouldn't buy motors over 5 years old if for no other reason then parts availability and corrosive wear and buildup is a big concern.
