I am partial to the ladies and have had some really good ones. I have always had them fixed, I work my dogs year round, mange their diet and never delt with weight problems. Nothing more frustrating than a dog in full heat when the hunting is good.

If I am going to cut a male I like snipping them when they are young, before they ever start lifting a leg to do their business. It shaves a lot of blind bags and coats and waders from man-dog showers.

I think people describe temperament in different ways. A dog with high drive will not be less driven simply by neutering. Some of the best dogs I have ever worked with have been neutered.

I am pretty certain I know the definition of temperment. I was just letting him know my experience with 10 labs and 5 litters. I will never spay a hunting dog again. Glad it worked out for you.

I was speaking in general, I would think you know what temperament is.
I have worked exclusively in the dog business professionally for 25 years now. Its what I do for a living everyday. I am not trying to argue with you but the number of dogs you speak of is very small. My statement is based on the national consensus. Also it is what the veterinarian community states.
I dont want to hijack this thread. Just answering his question about spaying or neutering that was asked in the original thread.

Not trying to argue just stating my experience to the original poster which is the opposite of yours. Like I said glad it has worked out for you.

Duffy,
Here are a few myths that I found on the (AVMA) American Veterinarian Medical Assoc.

MYTH: I want my dog to be protective.
FACT: It is a dog's natural instinct to protect home and family. A dog's personality is formed more by genetics and environment than by sex hormones.

MYTH: I don't want my male dog or cat to feel like less of a male.
FACT: Pets don't have any concept of sexual identity or ego. Neutering will not change a pet's basic personality. He doesn't suffer any kind of emotional reaction or identity crisis when neutered.

MYTH: My pet will get fat and lazy.
FACT: The truth is that most pets get fat and lazy because their owners feed them too much and don't give them enough exercise.

Are you the Rusty with the boarding kennel off Pinhook Rd in Lafayette?
If so, I used to board my Rott with you and he always talked about what a good time he had.

Yes K-9 Security. I sold it years ago. Sold it to a couple Vets in Lafayette.

ive been told that its healthier for dogs to be fixed. Is this true?

rustyb 07-09-2012 08:31 PM

The health concerns in males are testicular cancer. In females one of the main concerns is ovarian cancer. I cant say how high the risk are. So eliminating those concerns would make it healthier. But most people have em fixed for the most obvious. No puppies, no heat cycles, no roaming......
