how do you know there is a reef where you are fishing, or how do you find them other than trackin down gps coordinates? I never did understand how yall know reefs are there. I have tried to tell the difference with my sonar, but just don't get it. I still have the tendency to beat the banks like I have always done bass fishin, or I fish workin birds. I never do too well fishin out in the middle like those pics above.

Just feel the bottom with your rod tip. If it's rocky and ur tip comes up broken ur on a reef lol. If it's soft ur in mud. On depth finder you can see a slight rise in depth on the reefs.

you need to get the super duper reef finding machine. they are sold at fine retailers everywhere and for a nominal fee you can find reefs just like ole W.
make a trip to your local hardware store get ur hands on an 8-10' piece of pvc to keep in your boat. probe the bottom and compare to your sonar, this will help you learn the differences

Or get a piece of heavy chain and some smaller chain. 20'. If drag it on the bottom while it is cleated off and you can hear the reef.

If you did this...... I would think this would scare the fish and they would move off the reef.
You would have to come back later to fish there.

oh, I'm not kiddin, the look on peoples face is priceless! of course, I only do that to people who motor up to me. I swear, that is the most rude thing to do, especially when they have a trollin motor sittin right there on the front of their boat. Hell, I'm a newbie to all this, and even I know better than that.

No feelings hurt here just I think we could have taken a better approach to share the wealth! lol

W said the best way to find a reef is to lower your power pole and drive until you can hear it dragging the reef.

I will admit I did this once about 3 years ago..Did not motor just trollmotor ...
I knew some guys were sitting on a small reef of the east bank that I never could find when no boats were around....So one day they had two boats on it...So i drifted in a good bit...Mark and left..
Came back later and drug bottom until I found it.......:smokin:
